Abstract: OBJECTIVE:To evaluate the distribution of folic acid intake and the safety of different doses of supplements in women of childbearing age. METHODS:Data were used from two non-consecutive days of food records of 6,837 women of childbearing age (19-40 years old) participants of the National Food Survey, a module of the Household Budget Survey 2008-2009. “…The paper also discusses that while folate has been associated with decreased risk of certain chronic diseases, there is strong evidence that the excess of nutrients may increase DNA synthesis, stimulating cell proliferation and participate in tumor progression [ 68 ]. Furthermore, because current evidence of the benefits of regular use and risk of excessive consumption of supplements containing folic acid, it is necessary to monitor use of supplements [ 69 , 70 ].…”

“…Survey (INA) indicate that it is almost impossible for women of childbearing age to achieve the recommended additional folate intake only from food sources of natural folate, as these women would need to drastically increase their intake of fruit, vegetables, legumes, and pulses in their diet. Even considering the intake of fortified food products, the recommended level of folate is still not reached in Brazil 32 . Also, our study describes the intake among users and non-users of dietary supplements.…”
