Only a few phenological models have been formulated for rain-fed avocados in warm subhumid environments, and none of them have suggested crop management strategies for improving the trees performance in such conditions. The occurrence and intensity of major phenological events were assessed in 'Hass' and 'Margarida' avocado trees, in order to properly schedule the main crop practices for optimum management of rain-fed orchards in warm subhumid growing environments. Shoot growth, root density, number of open flowers, fruit set and fruit dropping rate were evaluated. For both cultivars, two shoot flushes were observed in September-October (spring) and January-February (summer), while a maximum feeder root growth took place in late August, coinciding with flowering. Two other minor root growth flushes occurred after the onset of summer rains. Both cultivars had only one flowering period, followed by an intense fruitlet dropping. A second minor fruit dropping wave occurred in February (mid-summer), for both cultivars. By determining the extent of each phenological phase in both avocado cultivars, it is possible to schedule applications of fertilizer, mulch and soil amendments, during the root growth flushes, as well as foliar sprays during shoot flushes, in order to maintain an adequate nutritional and sanitary status.

O presente trabalho teve como objetivo caracterizar o pH e a disponibilidade de Ca2+, Mg2+ e K no perfil de um latossolo em diferentes distâncias relacionadas ao caule do abacateiro Hass em duas fases do ciclo produtivo. Foram retiradas amostras simples nas camadas de 0-20, 20-40, 40-60, 60-80 e 80-100 cm em três distâncias em relação ao caule do abacateiro, 50, 150 e 250 cm, respectivamente. Foram quantificados pH, Ca2+, Mg2+ e K. A produtividade foi calculada pela colheita e classificação de frutos de cada planta; a média foi extrapolada para a área de um hectare. Constatou-se que a variação do pH está mais relacionada às camadas do solo e que os valores de pH em todas as profundidades e distâncias são considerados satisfatórios para o abacateiro. As disponibilidades de Ca2+ e Mg2+ foram mais elevadas nas camadas superficiais. A disponibilidade de K foi mais elevada na camada superficial, e a 150 cm do tronco observaram-se os menores valores. A produção não foi alterada pela ausência de adubação. Serão necessários mais estudos por períodos maiores para causar maior variação na disponibilidade dos nutrientes e que possam indicar de forma mais assertiva o volume de solo explorado pelas raízes.

Avocado is an important fruit for fresh consumption and as raw material for several industries. In order to obtain good productivity and fruit quality, adequate plant nutrition is essential. However, information on the relationship between time of year, phenology and nutritional status of plants of different genotypes is difficult to compare, as most data are obtained from plants of different ages, planted in soils with different fertility levels, different management strategies and most cultivated under edaphoclimatic conditions different from those of Brazil. This study evaluated the seasonal nutrient content variation of avocado leaves, genotypic differences, the relationship with phenological stages and the periods of greater nutrient content stability in ‘Fortuna’, ‘Geada’ and ‘Quintal’ avocado genotypes cultivated in the municipality of Jardinópolis-SP, Brazil. All plants aged 30 years, were randomly planted within the same area and submitted to the same cultural treatments and management. Nutrient contents are more stable during the flowering phase (July to September) and in the final phase of fruit formation (February to March). In most of the cycle, ‘Geada’ plants have lower S, P and Zn levels compared to ‘Fortuna’ and ‘Quintal’ genotypes. ‘Fortuna’ genotype has higher Ca, Mg and Mn levels than the others at the time of fruit harvest (April to June). In the budding phase of the three genotypes (October), increase in N, P, K, S, Cu, Zn contents and decrease in Ca, Mg and Mn contents were observed.
