This article reviews three classic texts of the French, American-Realist and English schools in International Relations, namely Tout Empire Périra (Duroselle 1992), Politics Among Nations (Morgenthau 1948), and Power Politics (Wight 1978). I argue that Wight's approach can be regarded as a middle course between those of Duroselle and Morgenthau, and that Wight adopted this position in order to associate himself with important assumptions by both Duroselle and Morgenthau. In particular, there are similarities between Wight's concept of 'international revolution' and Duroselle's notion of the 'unbearable. ' Both are critical of behavioural methods, and both search for recurrences in international relations. As regards Morgenthau, Wight shares with him a Realist view of international anarchy, a classical understanding of 'national interest, ' and an understanding of ideologies as the legitimation of government actions.

Resumo: O presente artigo tem como escopo oferecer um modelo capaz de tornar inteligível o fenômeno das identidades supranacionais e de realçar suas idiossincrasias em face de outras manifestações identitárias. Em virtude da posição central atribuída ao conceito de identidade neste artigo e por conta de seu caráter polissêmico e de suas inúmeras possibilidades de implicações, torna-se indispensável examinar, primeiramente, qual a definição a ser utilizada e os respectivos referenciais teóricos vinculados ao tema, objetivando operacionalizar o modelo aqui trabalhado e impedir equívocos derivados de problemas de nomenclatura. Posteriormente, elaborar-se-á um sistema direcionado para a compreensão da lógica de operação das identidades supranacionais. Embora o referido sistema seja tributário da contribuição intelectual ofertada pela escola francesa das Relações Internacionais, realizar-se-ão cruzamentos com outras correntes teóricas e com a produção de pensadores clássicos oriundos das demais áreas das ciências humanas.
