Purpose: to investigate and compare hearing abilities in normal hearing bilingual students, at different levels of English proficiency (basic, intermediate and advanced), using behavioral testing and electrophysiological testing. Methods: this study is descriptive, quantitative and transversal. The sample consisted of 60 subjects (language schools students at different English proficiency levels: 20 at advanced level (AG); 20 at intermediate level (IG); 20 at basic level (BG)) with normal hearing and no complaints about auditory processing abilities, aged 18-35 years. They were subjected to behavioral test: Random Gap Detection Test (RGDT) that assesses ability of temporal resolution; and electrophysiological test Long Latency Auditory Evoked Potential (LLAEP) with verbal stimuli (syllables /ba/ -frequent stimulus and /di/ -rare stimulus) evaluating memory, attention and auditory discrimination. Results: it was noticed a statistically significant difference between ears for: BG, to amplitude of N1 and P2, with higher values for left ear; IG to amplitude of P1, N1 and P2, with higher values for left ear; AG to latency of N1, with higher values for left ear, and amplitudes of components P2, N2 and P3, with higher values for left ear. Between groups, RGDT showed lower values of AG, and latency of N1 component, with higher values for BG. Conclusion: there were significant differences in temporal resolution ability, better for students in advanced level of English and also to the latency of evoked cortical N1 with higher values for students at a basic level. Métodos: este estudo tem caráter descritivo, quantitativo e transversal. A amostra foi composta por 39 sujeitos (alunos de escolas de idiomas: 13 no nível avançado (GA); 13 no nível intermediário (GI); 13 no nível básico (GB)), com idade entre 18 a 35 anos, limiares auditivos tonais dentro dos limites da normalidade e sem queixas de habilidades de processamento auditivo. Foram submetidos aos testes comportamentais: teste de detecção de gap (RGDT); e ao teste eletrofisiológico potencial evocado auditivo de longa latência (PEALL), com estímulos verbais (sílabas /ba/ -frequente -e /di/ -raro) Resultados: verificou-se diferença estatisticamente significante entre as orelhas para: o GB, para a amplitude de N1 e P2, com maiores valores para a orelha esquerda; o GI, para a amplitude de P1, N1 e P2, com maiores valores para a orelha esquerda, o GA, para a latência do componente N1, com maiores valores para a orelha esquerda, e, para as amplitudes dos componentes P2, N2 e P3, com maiores valores para a orelha esquerda. PURPOSE: To assess the auditory ability of temporal resolution and to compare the random gap detection test (RGDT) versions with pure tone and clicks stimuli. METHODS: Participants were 40 young individuals of both genders with ages between 18 and 25 years, and normal hearing thresholds for the sound frequencies of 250 Hz to 8 kHz. Initially, participants were submitted to the basic audiological evaluation. Then they underwent the RGDT with pure tone and clicks stimuli. Finally, we obtained the temporal acuity threshold, which corresponds to the shorter silence interval in which the patient perceives two sounds, for each type of stimulus, called final temporal acuity threshold for pure tones (mean of the thresholds obtained for 500 Hz, 1k, 2k and 4 kHz), and temporal acuity threshold for clicks. RESULTS: The mean temporal acuity threshold for the sound frequency of 500 Hz was 7.25 ms; for the frequency of 1 kHz was 7.25 ms; for 2 kHz was 6.73 ms; for the frequency of 4 kHz was 6.03 ms. The final temporal acuity threshold was 6.72 ms. The mean temporal acuity threshold for clicks was 6.43 ms. No difference was found between the temporal acuity thresholds obtained with pure tone and clicks stimuli. CONCLUSION: There is no difference in the performance of individuals on the auditory ability of temporal resolution, regardless of the auditory stimulus used.

RESUMOObjetivo: esclarecer a relação entre desempenho escolar e aspectos temporais auditivos. Método: estudo descritivo-transversal com amostra de conveniência, composta por 82 estudantes, na faixa etária de 11 a 13 anos, sendo 43 do sexo feminino e 38 do sexo masculino do 6º ano de uma escola de financiamento privado na Região Metropolitana Conflito de interesses: inexistentecapacidades do processamento auditivo, são as habilidades do processamento temporal, uma vez que muitas das características que englobam a informação auditiva são de alguma forma, influenciadas pelo tempo [1][2][3][4] . O interesse pelo papel dos aspectos temporais auditivos foi originado pela constatação de sua atribuição fundamental na habilidade da comunicação humana. Os aspectos temporais auditivos estão relacionados intimamente na capacidade do indivíduo em reconhecer, discernir e perceber os aspectos segmentais e suprassegmentais da fala 5,6 . Além disso, sabe-se que a integridade desses aspectos é um pré-requisito para que o sistema auditivo defina a duração dos sons, o intervalo que os separa e a sequência em que ocorrem, habilidades essas, imprescindíveis para o processamento da música e da fala 3,7,8 . Os aspectos temporais podem ser divididos em categorias que auxiliam no entendimento de alguns INTRODUÇÃOA integridade auditiva é um pré-requisito para um efetivo processo de ensino-aprendizagem. Isso porque, a audição desempenha importante papel na aquisição e desenvolvimento da linguagem, além da contribuição decisiva e preponderante na comunicação.
