Palliative care is aimed at people with diseases without perspective of cure or terminally, aiming to provide a better quality of life. This study aims to investigating the discourse of nurses about their understanding of palliative care to elderly patient with cancer and identify strategies used by nurses to promote palliative care to the elderly cancer patient. It is an exploratory research of a qualitative nature, carried out with thirteen nurses from a philanthropic institution in the city of João Pessoa, through a questionnaire. The empirical material was subjected to thematic content analysis, resulting in three categories: design of nurses to assist the elderly in Palliative Care: promoting comfort and minimizing the suffering, the importance of palliative care in humanized care to the elderly with cancer and strategies for the Promotion of Care of the Elderly with Cancer. Participants highlighted the palliative care as essential in the humanization of care, ensuring the dignity and quality of life among the elderly with cancer without possibilities of cure, adding such assistance, the family.

Objective: to verify the level of self-esteem of people with venous ulcer and its relationship with sociodemographic, care and clinical characteristics. Methods: cross-sectional study with 44 patients with venous ulcers assisted in primary health care and evaluated using the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale. Descriptive and inferential statistics were performed. The t-test was to compare means of the scale scores in relation to sociodemographic, care and clinical characteristics. Results: the mean self-esteem was 9.3 (± 5.1). The variables that showed association with self-esteem were: married/common-law married patients (p=0.016), with occupation (p=0.023), using compressive therapy (p=0.040), under less than six months of treatment (p=0.014), and with small ulcers (p=0.010). Conclusion: the self-esteem of patients with venous ulcers was satisfactory/high, and it was especially higher among those with partner, with occupational activity, making use of compressive therapy, at the initial phase of the treatment and who had small ulcers. Métodos: estudo transversal com 44 pacientes com úlceras venosas atendidos na atenção primária à saúde e avaliados mediante a Escala de Autoestima de Rosenberg. Foi realizada estatística descritiva e inferencial dos dados. Utilizou-se o Test t na identificação de diferenças entre as médias dos escores da escala em relação às características sociodemográficas, assistenciais e clínicas. Resultados: a média da autoestima foi 9,3 (±5,1). As variáveis que apresentaram associação com autoestima foram: pessoas casadas/união estável (p=0,016), com ocupação (p=0,023), em uso de terapia compressiva (p=0,040), menos de seis meses de tratamento (p=0,014) e com úlceras pequenas (p=0,010). Conclusão: a autoestima dos pacientes com úlceras venosas mostrou-se satisfatória/alta, sendo mais elevada entre aqueles com companheiro, atividade ocupacional, uso de terapia compressiva, na fase inicial de tratamento e que apresentavam úlceras pequenas.

Objective: to understand the experience of care of people with venous ulcers using an Unna's boot. Method: a qualitative study, based on the social phenomenology by Alfred Schütz, was carried out with 12 adults interviewed in 2015. The statements were analyzed and organized in thematic categories. Results: the following categories emerged: "Unna's boot annoyance versus wound improvement", "Diffi culties for accessing care with the Unna's boot", "Care for healing and preventing recurrence", and "Receiving more attention from the healthcare professional". Conclusion: the experience of care of people using an Unna's boot revealed the annoyance caused by this device, which was overcome due to the wound improvement. However, access to care was compromised by the lack of structure at the service, frustrating the patients' expectations regarding wound healing. The issues of these people's intersubjective universe should be considered in the management of care of venous ulcers. Resultados: foram desveladas as categorias: "O incômodo da bota de Unna versus a melhora da ferida", "Difi culdades para o acesso ao cuidado com a Bota de Unna", "Cuidar para cicatrizar e prevenir recidivas" e "Receber mais atenção do profi ssional de saúde". Conclusão: a vivência de cuidado de pessoas em uso da Bota de Unna revelou o incômodo proporcionado por este dispositivo, superado pela melhora da ferida. Porém, o acesso ao cuidado foi comprometido pela falta de estrutura do serviço, frustrando as expectativas dos participantes em relação à cicatrização da ferida. As questões do universo intersubjetivo dessas pessoas devem ser consideradas na gestão do cuidado da úlcera varicosa.
