Porque profissionais de enfermagen com incontinência urinária não buscam tratamento RESUMOVerificou-se a prevalência de incontinência urinária (IU) entre mulheres profissionais de enfermagem de um hospital de ensino, se houve procura por tratamento médico e as razões alegadas para não fazê-lo. Entre as 291 (77%) que responderam a um questionário, 27,5% relataram IU, destas, 79% não tinham procurado tratamento médico. Os principais motivos para não tratarem a IU foram a pequena quantidade de urina perdida (28,8%) e a crença de que a IU é um problema comum para as mulheres (22%). A prevalência de IU e as justificativas para não procurarem tratamento foram semelhantes às de estudos anteriores com mulheres em geral. Conclui-se que o fato de serem profissionais de saúde parece não ter influenciado suas atitudes. Descritores: Incontinência urinária; Saúde da mulher; Enfermagem. ABSTRACT It was verified the prevalence of urinary incontinence (UI) among the women's nurse staff at a medical school, if the incontinent women seek a doctor for treatment and what was they reasons for not seeking treatment. INTRODUÇÃOA incontinência urinária (IU) uma condição que afeta aproximadamente 13 milhões de norte-americanos adultos, entre ao quais 11 milhões (85%) são mulheres. Admite-se que uma entre quatro mulheres com idade entre 30 e 59 anos já vivenciou algum episódio de IU (1) .Nos últimos anos, estudos têm avaliado a qualidade de vida das mulheres incontinentes, visto que reportam pior qualidade de vida quando comparadas com as continentes (2) . As repercussões no estilo de vida são numerosas, normalmente as mulheres incontinentes sofrem com problemas físicos, econômicos e psicossociais que interferem no convívio social, profissional, sexual e familiar (3) .Ainda que a IU feminina seja um fator contribuinte para restrições das atividades desenvolvidas diariamente (4,5) , muitas mulheres que apresentam graus leve e moderado de incontinência não buscam por atendimento médico, no entanto, a freqüência pela procura por tratamento da IU tende a acentuar no período pós-menopausa quando se eleva o grau de perda urinária (3) .

The initial assessment of patient aims to rule out specific diseases that can lead to urinary incontinence, to evaluate the severity of the condition, to make the diagnosis by the UI classification and to determinate the characteristics of the symptoms to determine an appropriate therapeutic approach.…”
