This qualitative study with a phenomenological approach looked at elderly people (60 years of age or more) who attend two Elderly Community Centers located in a state capital in Central-Western Brazil. The goal was to understand the experience of aging through the experience of people who are aging and its meaning for nursing practice. Phenomenological interview resources were used, with the following guiding question: 'What is it like to reach this age? To live so many years?' The results showed that these people's main concerns are: to show that they do not lose their identity because they age and that, sometimes, in spite of their chronological age, they do not feel aged; they expect acknowledgement as citizens; they reinforce that being healthy is essential and grants them autonomy in their lives; they emphasize the importance of family support, life and care; they value financial independence and avoid talking about the finite nature of human beings.

RESUMO Este trabalho teve como escopo investigar como a velhice é vivenciada, de forma "gendrada", por homens e mulheres em uma instituição geriátrica e sua relação com a saúde mental. Foram realizadas 18 entrevistas, baseadas em um questionário semi-estruturado (9 com homens, 9 com mulheres). A análise das falas mostrou como as relações de gênero alicerçam as vivências das idosas e dos idosos institucionalizados, implicando em importantes diferenças e especificidades de sofrimento psíquico. Os resultados sugerem a importância de se levar em consideração os valores de gênero na formulação de políticas públicas de saúde mental para essa população.

Qualitative study that aimed at investigating present and decisive gender subjects of health and elder people's life quality. The subjects were 20 (twenty) seniors of the Programa Terceira Idade em Ação-PTIA. The semi-structured interview was used as data collection technique. From the speeches, information that answered the investigation inquietudes emerged and they made possible the formulation of three analysis categories. In the first, it stood out the low self-esteem lived by the men when they age, otherwise in the second one it was evidenced the autonomy and the freedom conquered by the senior women, and in the third category the learning happened among the old ladies who participated of PTIA. Concluding that there is influence of the gender subjects in health and life quality in aging.
