Outbreaks of Chrysodeixis includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) in common bean and castor bean in São Paulo State, Brazil

Since 2009, increasing populations of Chrysodeixis includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) have been observed in cultivated common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) and castor bean (Ricinus communis L.) at the Lageado Experimental Farm, belonging to the FCA/UNESP, Botucatu, São Paulo State, Brazil. Defoliations around 80% and 50% were observed in the common bean cv. Pérola and castor bean cv. IAC-2028, respectively. Samples of individuals (caterpillars and pupae) were collected in the field, and kept in laboratory until adult emergence aiming to confirm the species. These are new observations for common bean in São Paulo State and, in the case of castor bean, unpublished in Brazil. It suggests that C. includens has adapted to attack other agricultural crops, demanding attention of common bean and castor bean producers.Key words: herbivory, alternative hosts, soybean looper.Surtos populacionais de Chrysodeixis includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) em feijoeiro e mamoneira no Estado de São Paulo, Brasil ResumoDesde 2009, populações crescentes de Chrysodeixis includens (Walker) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) vêm sendo observadas em lavouras de feijoeiro comum (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) e mamoneira (Ricinus communis L.), na Fazenda Experimental Lageado, pertencente à FCA/UNESP, Campus de Botucatu, Estado de São Paulo, Brasil. Desfolhas ao redor de 80% e 50% foram constatadas em feijoeiro Pérola e em mamoneira IAC-2028, respectivamente. Amostras de indivíduos (lagartas e pupas) foram coletadas a campo e mantidas em laboratório até a emergência dos adultos para confirmação da espécie. Essas observações em feijoeiro são inéditas para o estado de São Paulo e, no caso da mamoneira, inéditas no Brasil, sugerindo que o inseto vem se adaptando e atacando outras culturas de interesse agrícola, exigindo maior atenção por parte dos produtores de feijão e mamona.Palavras-chave: herbivoria, hospedeiros alternativos, lagarta falsa-medideira.

Constatou-se a ocorrência de lagartas da espécie Acraga moorei Dyar (Lepidoptera: Dalceridae) alimentando-se de folhas de macadâmia (Macadamia integrifolia Maid. & Bet.) em Tietê (SP). A infestação ocorreu em maio-junho de 1993, em experimento de consorciação com cafeeiro, atingindo todas as plantas de macadâmia e, mais raramente, as de cafeeiro. Concentrando-se na parte média das plantas, as lagartas, de cor branca, permaneciam na face superior das folhas, alimentando-se preferencialmente do bordo para dentro. A transformação em pupa também se deu na face superior das folhas, com confecção de casulos brancos, e a oviposição, na face inferior, sendo os ovos colocados em pequenos grupos. Observou-se a incidência sobre lagartas do fungo branco Paecilomyces farinosus (Holm ex. SF Gray), bastante disseminado no campo, do parasitóide Lespesia affinis (Townsend) (Diptera: Tachinidae) e do hiperparasitóide Brachymeria carinatifrons Gahan (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae). Apesar do cultivo de macadâmia há anos no local, não foram verificadas infestações anteriores desse inseto.

Interest in bioenergetic crops, such as the castor oil plant Ricinus communis (Euphorbiaceae), for production of biodiesel has increased in recent years. In this paper, phytophagous arthropods, their natural enemies and floral visitors associated with this plant in the world are reviewed. Despite its insecticidal properties, arthropods have been reported feeding on R. communis plants. The arthropod pests of R. communis damage all parts of the plant, including the seeds, where some toxic compounds are even more concentrated. In the scientific databases, we found reports of 193 arthropods associated to R. communis in different parts of the world. This information obtained in the scientific databases was concentrated in a database and analyzed according to the coevolutive hypothesis, which allows us to predict that the greatest wealth and abundance of phytogenic arthropods is found in the center of origin by R. communis. According to this review, Achaea janata, Spodoptera litura, Edwardsiana flavescens, Liriomyza trifolii, L. sativae, Spilosoma obliqua, Cogenethes punctiferalis, Oxyrhachis taranda, and Helicoverpa armigera are the most devastating pests in Asia. In Africa, Agrotis ipsilon, S. exigua, Nezara viridula, Trialeurodes ricini, and Tetranychus urticae were mentioned as the most important. In Central and South-America, Phyllophaga sp., Agrietes sp., Erinnyis ello, N. viridula, Corythucha gossypii, Falconia antioquiana, and S. marima are reported as pests of economic importance. The most commonly reported natural enemies of some of these arthropod pests were species of Bacillus thuringiensis, B. cereus, B. popilliae, Trichogramma achaeae, T. chilonis, T. minutum, T. australicum, T. dendrolimi, T. pretiosum, T. evanescens, Microplitis rufiventris, M. maculipennis, M. ophiusae, Telenomus remus, T. proditor, Stethorus siphonulus and S. histrio. Apis mellifera is recorded as the main insect pollinator of R. communis. Pest management methods used against the arthropod pests of R. communis include biological, ethological, mechanical, cultural, genetic, and chemical control.
