“…), tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.), soybean, peanut (Arachis hypogaea L.), sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) and some weeds (Costa & Carvalho, 1961). The association of soybean bud blight and TSV was reported for the first time in 1955 (Costa et al, 1955). At that time, the authors mentioned that similar symptoms were described in soybean in the USA, but these symptoms were caused by Tobacco ringspot virus (TRSV), family Comoviridae, genus Nepovirus.…”

“…At that time, the authors mentioned that similar symptoms were described in soybean in the USA, but these symptoms were caused by Tobacco ringspot virus (TRSV), family Comoviridae, genus Nepovirus. The disease was called soybean bud blight by Costa et al (1955). Since then, several other viruses inducing similar symptoms have been described on soybeans in Brazil (Costa, 1982), causing serious confusion in field diagnosis.…”

“…Tobacco streak virus (TSV) is the type member of the genus Ilarvirus (Bromoviridae) and the causal agent of bud blight in soybean (Glycine max L. Merrill) in the United States and Brazil (Costa et al 1955;Fagbenle and Ford 1970). In the United States, TSV was first reported in Iowa and Ohio in soybean plants showing symptoms of stunting, shepherd's crook, delayed maturity, poor pod production, dark green apical leaves with rugosity, necrotic streaks in the stem, and bud blight (Johnson 1936(Johnson , 1943Melhus 1942;Fagbenle and Ford 1970).…”

“…Soybean bud blight in Brazil is caused by tobacco streak virus (COSTA et al 1955) and is presently found in some areas in the states of Sao Paulo and Parana. The virus has caused severe yield losses only to soybeans although it also infects cotton, sunflower, tobacco, tomato, and some weeds (COSTA and CARVALHO 1961).…”
