Provas de separação de diversos óleos essenciais foram efetuadas em laboratório, sob temperaturas compreendidas entre 10 e 80ºC, em progressão de 5 em 5ºC. Dez, óleos de densidade inferior à da água, produzidos comercialmente no Brasil, foram estudados. Tomaram-se de cada um quatro amostras de 50 ml, correspondentes às 4 repetições da experiência. Em um frasco Erlenmeyer de 500 ml, contendo 350 ml de água destilada, foi adicionada a amostra a ser estudada. Fêz-se o ajuste ila temperatura desejada com a introdução do frasco em uma cuba de gêlo ou pelo seu aquecimento em banho-maria. Durante o processo de adaptação do meio à temperatura externa, o frasco foi agitado levemente, a fim de que o óleo e a água se mantivessem em mistura, aquecendo-se ou resfriando-se uniformemente. Uma vez obtida a temperatura desejada, agitou-se o frasco a mão, durante 30 segundos, de maneira uniforme em tôdas as observações. Deixado, a seguir, em repouso, foi anotado o tempo gasto até a formação de linha divisória, nitida, entre as camadas. As provas demonstraram, invariavelmente, que o tempo requerido para a separação diminuiu à medida que aumentou a temperatura de operação. Foram calculadas as velocidades médias de separação das gotículas de óleo, verificando-se que, nos vasos separadores dos alambiques, a velocidade de separação deve ser maior do que a velocidade de caminhamento da mistura, a fim de que a separação se processe com maior perfeição. Essa norma deve orientar a construção dos vasos separadores, no que diz respeito às suas dimensões e ao seu formato, visto que a velocidade de caminhamento da mistura é uma função do formato e da capacidade do recipiente separador e da vazão do condensado. Pode ser retardada para beneficiar a separação. A velocidade de separação das gotículas, por sua vez. depende apenas das propriedades físicas e mecânicas do produto e da temperatura de operação.
Foram estudadas no Centro Experimental de Campinas, entre 1973 e 1976, 450 progênies do clone Samby e 295 do clone Valinhos, ambos da espécie Mentha arvensis L. var. piperascens Malinvaud, que apresentavam alguma resistência à ferrugem causada pelo fungo Puccinia menthae Pers., bom desenvolvimento vegetativo e óleo essencial com alto teor em mentol. As progênies foram obtidas de polinização livre. As plantas que apresentavam pulegona foram eliminadas por seleção olfativa, e as restantes, inoculadas com uredosporos de P. menthae Pers. e, posteriormente, classificadas em três notas de resistência à doença. Em pleno florescimento, as plantas foram destiladas em corrente de vapor, e o óleo essencial obtido analisado em cromatógrafo de gás para avaliação quantitativa de seus componentes principais: mentol, mentona e pulegona. Destacaram-se oito progênies do clone Valinhos e catorze do Samby, respectivamente, mentol entre 75,85-85,18% e 77,12-83,74%, e pulegona entre 0,48-1,36% e 0,94-2,05% pela resistência à ferrugem. Três progênies do clone Valinhos e duas do Samby apresentaram baixos teores do mentol: 56,65, 56,94 e 60,11, e 54,26 e 64,93% respectivamente, semelhantes aos verificados nos óleos desmentolados de M. arvensis L.
Em um ensaio de espaçamento x sistema de plantio, instalado na Estação Experimental Central do Instituto Agronômico, em solo tipo terra-roxa-misturada e abrangendo os espaçamentos 90 x 30, 90 x 90. 120 x 30 e 120 x 90cm, com dois sistemas de plantio - ao nível do solo e em leiras - fêz-se o estudo do sistema radicular do vetiver. As conclusões do presente trabalho foram as seguintes: houve maior produção de raízes no sistema de plantio ao nível do solo; nos dois sistemas de plantio o espaçamento 90 x 30cm forneceu as maiores quantidades de raízes; 88% daa raízes estavam localizadas nos primeiros 30cm do solo, não sendo pois necessário ir além de 50cm de profundidade para se extrair a quase totalidade das rafzes produzidas pelo vetiver.
