Spinal cord injury: epidemiologycal study of 386 cases with emphasis on those patients admitted more than four hours after the trauma

Abstract: -We studied 386 cases of spinal cord injury to analyze the follow up of the patients admitted most of the time more than four hours, the majority of the injuries happening far from the attending health service and first specialized care received long after the accident. This is a clinical study based on data collected during hospitalization of the patients, operated or not, in a Brazilian public health service. The lesion mainly seen was fracture and dislocation, isolated or on multiple levels, and the most im… Show more

“…Even in parts of Brazil, only 21% of SCI patients were admitted to the hospital within 4 h of trauma with 11.6% hospitalized 448 h after injury secondary to long transport time. 50 In contrast, in New South Wales, the average time until admission after traumatic SCI is 12 h. 51 Importantly, early PUs are preventable with the implementation of pre-hospital transport protocols. 52 Costs and consequences PUs beget significant morbidity and mortality among individuals with SCI the world over.…”

“…In contrast, the spinal cord injury (SCI) is defined as the decrease or loss of motor and/or sensory and/or anatomic function below the level of the lesion by the American Spinal Injury Association (ASIA), and such lesion can be complete or incomplete due to the impairment of neural elements inside the spinal channel 2 . SCI is characterized as one of the most severe disabling neurological syndromes, leading to changes in sensitivity, motricity and disorders of the autonomic system in the segments of the body that are located below the lesion 3,4 . Even though its estimated worldwide incidence is not so high (15 to 40 cases per million), its social and economic cost is disproportionally high 5 , negatively impacting on the quality of life and self-esteem of those affected by it 6 .…”
