Stigma and resultant psychosocial issues are major hurdles that people with epilepsy confront in their daily life. People with epilepsy, particularly women, living in economically weak countries are often ill equipped to handle the stigma that they experience at multiple levels. This paper offers a systematic review of the research on stigma from sociology and social psychology and details how stigma linked to epilepsy or similar conditions can result in stereotyping, prejudice and discrimination. We also briefly discuss the strategies that are most commonly utilized to mitigate stigma. Neurologists and other health care providers, social workers, support groups and policy makers working with epilepsy need to have a deep understanding of the social and cultural perceptions of epilepsy and the related stigma. It is necessary that societies establish unique determinants of stigma and set up appropriate strategies to mitigate stigma and facilitate the complete inclusion of people with epilepsy as well as mitigating any existing discrimination.

Социокультурные аспекты и различные виды стигматизации при эпилепсииЭпилепсией страдают приблизительно 50 млн чело-век во всем мире, Всемирная организация здравоохранения признает это заболевание одной из главных проблем обще-ственного здравоохранения [1]. Эпилепсия может быть идиопатической или выступать в качестве симптома раз-личных заболеваний, таких как опухоли, инфекция, череп-но-мозговая травма и др. [2]. Эпилепсия затрагивает людей всех возрастов, рас, социальных классов и стран [3], и стиг-ма, связанная с ней, оказывает значительное негативное влияние на жизнь пациентов. Социальные проблемы при эпилепсии во многом перевешивают медицинские. Хотя отношение социума к заболеванию варьирует от страны к стране и от культуры к культуре, нередко социальная изо-ляция пациентов с эпилепсией в результате их стигматиза-ции труднее поддается коррекции, чем сами приступы. Ощущение стигматизации, связанное с эпилепсией, может отрицательно повлиять на поведение, связанное со здо-ровьем, включая лечение и преодоление проблем, вызван-ных заболеванием. Эпилепсия и стигма влияют на все аспе-кты жизни пациентов -социальную жизнь, профессио-нальную деятельность, семейное положение. Связь между стигмой и снижением качества жизни подтверждена мно-гими исследователями. Определение стигмыСлово «стигма» с древнегреческого переводится как «знак, клеймо, татуировка, пятно, отметина». Определения феномена стигмы очень вариабельны. Многие авторы ци-тируют определение стигмы, данное Гофманом: «Атрибут, который глубоко дискредитирует», -что превращает носи-теля стигмы «из цельного и обычного человека в испорчен-ного, неполноценного» [4]. M.C. Stafford и R.R. Scott [5] считают, что стигма «характерна для лиц, которые противо-речат норме социальной единицы», где «норма» определя-ется как «общее убеждение, что человек должен вести себя определенным образом». J. Crocker и соавт.[6] указывают, что «стигматизированные индивиды обладают (или счита-ется, что обладают) определенным атрибутом, или характе-ристикой, передающей социальную идентичность, которая девальвирована в конкретном социальном контексте». Introduction: Epilepsy is very prevalent in our society, but unfortunately lack of knowledge is still very common, contributing to psycho-social difficulties to people with epilepsy. Purpose: The aim of this study was to assess the epilepsy' perception and attitudes by professionals of emergency medical service in Campinas, Brazil. Material and methods: This study was carried out with professionals of SAMU-192, who participated on the VII Stroke Workshop of Campinas in November 2007. Results: One hundred-forty nine (149) professionals answered the questionnaire (49% women, average age of 37 years, range from 21 to 59 year). Ninety (60%) were professionals allied to medicine (nurses, health auxiliary, dentists), six (4%) were physicians and 53 (36%) were other professions (secretary, driver). In overall, a great majority of the subjects had an appropriate knowledge regarding epilepsy. But, some beliefs are still present. In relation to epilepsy' perception, some wrong ideas appeared, as epilepsy is a contagious disease, people with epilepsy can not practice physical exercise or to work. Also, the doubts regarding pregnancy and treatment of epilepsy were observed. Regarding attitudes during an epileptic seizure, some inadequate attitudes appeared: to put something in patient's mouth, to restrict the patients' movements or give something strong to smell (alcohol or vinegar) in order to stop the seizure. Conclusion: In this context, it is necessary a continuous education programs to the allied health professionals to improve the perception and attitudes, bringing epilepsy out of the shadows.
