Schistosomiasis mansoni presenting as a cerebellar tumor: case report

Abstract: -the Manson's schistosomiasis tumoral form rarely affects the brain. there are only 12 cases prior related with a mean age of 25 years and a male predominance. We describe a 16-year-old Brazilian Northeastern boy with a cerebellar mass lesion. the radiological aspect was considered compatible with glioma and a gross total resection was performed. Microscopic examination disclosed intraparenchymal granulomas surrounding Schistosoma mansoni eggs. the case is compared with the literature findings and some peculia… Show more

“…Da Silva et al (2007) found that the prevalence and intensity of S. mansoni infection increased with increasing numbers of STH infections. They felt, however, that the strength of this association was not only because of socioeconomic or environmental conditions, but because of the interaction between the parasites as well and intrinsic host factors that increase susceptibility to several helminths (da Silva et al, 2007). We agree with that conclusion, but identified in this study that also the intermediate determinants for infectious diseases, such as housing and sanitation (water supply and sewage type), hygiene, purchasing power and education, are very important determinants.…”

“…Mapping the spatial distribution of co-infection is indeed an important way to determine the areas of priority and implement cost-effective measures of control programs (Raso et al, 2006). “…Cerebral schistosomiasis is mainly caused by S. japonicum infection. 5,6 Schistosoma mansoni [12][13][14][15][16] and S. haematobium 17 infection caused cerebral schistosomiasis have also been reported in several studies. No matter the kind of schistosomiasis infection, the mechanism by which Schistosoma eggs travel to the brain is still controversial.…”

“…The presence of multiple necrotic-exudative granulomas and extensive inflammation of the cerebellar vermis may produce hydrocephalus and raised cranial pressure. Neurological features are a decreased level of consciousness, nystagmus and paresis of conjugate gaze, papilledema and visual abnormalities, ataxia, headache, nausea and vomiting [30][31][32][33].…”
