Kleptomania, mood disorder and lithium

Abstract: Kleptomania has been found in association with major depression in a fairly large number of reports in recent years. We describe a patient with concurrent DSM-III-R Bipolar Mood Disorder and Kleptomania, whose symptoms remitted completely, apparently in response to lithium therapy, which raised the possibility that pharmacological treatment may benefit kleptomania. Further studies are needed to establish the possible relationship between kleptomania, mood disorders and lithium therapy.

“…Behavioral techniques (Schwartz and Wood, 1991) such as covert sensitization have been used with some success (Glover, 1985;Gauthier and Pellerin, 1982;Cautela, 1967), while pharmacotherapy, most notably lithium (Rocha and Rocha, 1992),¯uoxetine (Burstein, 1992;Stein et al, 1993) and other antidepressants (McElroy et al, 1991a,c), has met with mixed results (McElroy et al, 1991a;Burstein, 1992). The most common method of treatment has been the selfimposed banning of all shopping by the patient, in an attempt to prevent theft (Glover, 1985;Gudjonsson, 1987;McElroy et al, 1989).…”

“…The efficacy of buspirone augmentation during fluvoxamine treatment has also been reported [37]. However, no treatment response was obtained with non-reversible monoaminooxydase inhibitors, such as tranylcypromine [32,33], or, in one patient only, with desipramine [33]. Some authors have noted recently the emergence of kleptomania during selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor treatment in depressed patients [38].…”
