Factors associated with the successful aging of the socially-active elderly in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre Fatores associados ao envelhecimento bem-sucedido de idosos socialmente ativos da região metropolitana de Porto Alegre A b s t r a c t Objective: To identify the factors associated with aging of the socially-active elderly in the metropolitan region of Porto Alegre. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted involving a sample of 400 elderly subjects. Through a conglomerate analysis using the combined results of the Flanagan Scale and the quality of life assessment instrument developed by the World Health Organization (WHOQOL-100), the subjects classified as presenting a higher quality of life were considered to have aged successfully. Subjects were considered socially active if they participated in groups for elderly people or engaged in any activities outside of the nuclear family.Research data were collected using the following instruments: the Flanagan Quality of Life Scale; the World Health Organization WHOQOL-100 quality of life assessment instrument; Beck Hopelessness Scale (BHS); Geriatric Depression Scale, 15-item version (GDS-15, abridged from Yesavage),16 as well as a form used to collect participant information. Structured interviews were carried out with the help of psychology, nursing and physical education students, who had been previously trained to that end. Interviews were carried out between May and December 2002.All data were initially stored in an Excel spreadsheet and later transferred to and analyzed using the SPSS program, version 11.5.The cutoff points on the GDS-15 scale for elderly subjects were: scores lower than 5 indicated normality regarding depression; scores from 5 to 10 indicated mild to moderate depression; scores higher than 10 indicated severe depression.We preliminarily conducted two methodological studies: one to validate the Flanagan Quality of Life Scale and one to validate the WHOQOL-100. A cluster analysis was carried out, using as entry variables the predicted factorial analysis scores. In accordance with this analysis, the elderly subjects were classified into two groups: superior quality of life and inferior quality of life. 17In this study, we defined successful aging as having a superior quality of life, meeting the criterion established by the cluster analysis, which was carried out using the Flanagan Quality of Life Scale and the WHOQOL-100. Similarly, those classified as having an inferior quality of life were considered normally aging elderly subjects (presenting ordinary or usual aging). Statistical analysisUsing the Student's t-test for the study of two independent samples, we compared the two groups (superior quality of life versus inferior quality of life) regarding the following variables: age, hopelessness, depression and the factors retained in the factorial analysis of the Flanagan Quality of Life Scale and WHOQOL-100. Um dos comprometimentos que surgem com o avanço da idade é a redução na atividade do eixo GH/IGF-1. Tanto o envelhecimento, como a defi ciência de GH estão associados com a redução da síntese protéica, da massa magra e massa óssea; aumento da massa de tecido adiposo, situação esta denominada de somatopausa. (HUAYLLAS et al., 2001). Estes efeitos deletérios são corroborados por Badia et al. (1998) e Fernholm et al. (2000), os quais também citam atrofi a muscular, capacidade de exercício reduzida, alteração no perfi l lipídico, com aumento do colesterol total, e decréscimo do HDL-colesterol. Este estudo teve por objetivo comparar os níveis séricos de IGF-1 entre dois grupos de idosos do sexo feminino subdivididos em: Grupo 1 composto por 24 idosas ativas e Grupo 2 composto por 10 idosas sedentárias; idade mínima de 60 anos. O Grupo 1 foi submetido a um treinamento de força realizado duas vezes por semana, por um período mínimo de 12 semanas. Para análise dos níveis séricos de IGF-1 foi aplicado o método de Radioimunoensaio-IRMA (coated-Tube-Irma kit diagnostic use DSL-5600) (Diagnostic Systems Laboratories); sendo realizado dentro das normas éticas previstas na Resolução N° 196, de 10 de outubro de 1996, do Conselho Nacional de Saúde. Foram utilizados a estatística descritiva e o teste-t de Student no sentido de verifi car se havia diferenças signifi cativas entre as médias para p<0,05. Apesar da existência de diferenças significativas (Δ=11,84%) entre os valores médios das idades, tal diferença não interferiu de forma relevante em alterações dos níveis de IGF-1 e, portanto, não foram observadas diferenças signifi cativas entre os respectivos valores médios. Entretanto, foi observado alto índice de variabilidade (razão entre os valores de desviopadrão e a respectiva média, na variável IGF-1) entre os grupos.

Growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) have been suggested as "anti-aging" therapies, or for improving quality of life with aging. In this study, we focus on the actions of GH in the main organs and organ systems of the human body, like skeletal muscle, bones and brain, particularly in regard to data and research on the use of GH replacement therapy in adults without growth hormone deficiency, especially elderly patients. Several different studies have been carried out to show what the effects and side effects of GH replacement in healthy people and what would be the impact in quality of life and life span. In this review, we demonstrate what answers we have so far about the effects of GH replacement in many organs and systems in healthy people.
