This paper presents morphological descriptions and ecological data of cryptogam spores and other non-pollen palynomorphs from Quaternary sediments of Campos Basin, Rio de Janeiro, SE Brazil. The ages were derived from biostratigraphy of planktonic foraminifers and two radiocarbon dates, and suggest that sediment deposition started in the last 140,000 years BP. Thirty different types of palynomorphs were identified, described, and photographed: two bryophyte spores (sensu lato); 21 pteridophyte spores; four freshwater microalgae; onePseudoschizaea; and two microfungi. Some of the identified spores (Sphagnum, Blechnum, Cyatheaceae, Dennstaedtiaceae, Lycopodiella, Microgramma, Polypodium, Acrostichum, Pityrogramma, and Lygodium) are related to the modern flora found on the northern coast of Rio de Janeiro State, at the Restinga of Jurubatiba, from vegetation types such as shrub swamp/ coastal swamp formation, seasonally flooded forest, Clusia and Ericaceae woods, and disturbed vegetation. The freshwater microalgae and the microfungi are also presently recorded from the coastal lagoons of this region. The high spore concentration in slope sediments reflects the intense terrigenous influx, caused by a relative low sealevel during glacial stages. Palynological analysis suggests the presence of taxa from flooded forests and humid areas in the coastal plain during glacial and interglacial stages of the Late Pleistocene.

Coconut Creek (Florida), ISSN 0749-0208.Many aspects of the Santos Transgression (~21,227-20,448 to~5558-4558 cal YBP) remain controversial, especially before approximately 7800 cal YBP, because of the paucity of data for the Brazilian coast. In this context, benthic foraminiferal assemblages from between 9400 and 8385 cal YBP were analyzed from the S03 core collected at the Juréia-Itatins Ecological Station (JIES) with the aim of clarifying the behavior of the relative sea level along the Brazilian coast during this period. Microfaunal, taphonomical, and morphometric analyses of these microorganisms permitted recognition of eight paleoenvironmental conditions within the lagoon then existing at JIES. There were four phases of conspicuous marine contributions (9400-9338, 9072-8894, 8656-8641, and 8594-8500 cal YBP) with a climax at 8656 cal YBP, when the environment became more favorable to the growth, preservation, or both of benthic foraminifera. They were intercalated with two phases of prominent continental contributions (9338-9072 and 8500-8385 cal YBP), when there was an increase in the local hydrodynamic gradient at the S03 core sampling site. Furthermore, between 8806 and 8672 cal YBP and between 8625 and 8594 cal YBP, the benthic foraminifera are absent, most likely because of the lower pH of the mixohaline/limnetic waters present when the continental contribution was highest. These different phases of marine and continental contributions could be explained by the higher or lower inflow of seawater to the paleolagoon of the JIES and by changes of the regional rainfall.

ResumoPor apresentarem grande diversidade morfológica, os grãos de pólen, especialmente os de angiospermas, podem ser usados para determinar sequências estratigráficas, estabelecer a relação entre regiões geograficamente separadas e reconstruir o paleoambiente. A partir da década de 1970, estudos palinológicos em sedimentos quaternários vêm sendo realizados no Brasil, documentando as mudanças da vegetação e as variações climáticas ocorridas ao longo deste período geológico. Análises palinológicas em sedimentos provenientes da bacia hidrográfica do rio Guandu estão sendo apresentadas com os objetivos de reconstituir a vegetação pretérita da área, compreender a sua evolução florística e realizar inferências paleoclimáticas durante Pleistoceno Tardio. Há décadas, a área vem sofrendo profundas mudanças fisionômicas devido às atividades extrativistas, caracterizadas pelo Distrito Areeiro de Piranema. As cavas submersas resultantes da mineração possibilitaram a coleta de um pacote sedimentar lamoso contendo matéria orgânica, ao longo de um perfil colunar, no Areal Santobaia. O depósito foi dividido em cinco níveis, todos submetidos à metodologia de tratamento químico proposta como padrão. As análises geocronológicas resultaram em um intervalo de tempo entre 42.500 e 35.200 ± 340 anos AP. Os dados palinológicos evidenciaram que, apesar do clima frio e mais seco que o atual, característico do período glacial, o nível de umidade se manteve o suficiente para o estabelecimento de uma vegetação durante todo o intervalo cronológico. Localmente, uma mata paludosa sujeita às eventuais inundações fluviais estava presente, além de uma vegetação mais seca de baixada, em áreas fora do alcance das enchentes. Não foram observados palinomorfos que indicassem a formação de um local permanentemente alagado. No contexto mais regional, está inserida uma mata de encosta com um registro polínico pouco expressivo, porém sempre presente. Estas três formações vegetais coexistiram durante todo o período de tempo considerado, sendo a dimensão de cada uma diretamente influenciada pela oscilação das condições hidrográficas da bacia do rio Guandu.
