1Glanidium botocudo, new species, is described from the tributaries to the upper rio Doce and Mucuri, eastern Minas Gerais State, Brazil. It represents the northernmost record of a centromochlin catfish from the coastal rivers of the Northeastern Atlantic Forest. Glanidium botocudo is readily distinguished from its congeners, except Glanidium albescens, by the whitish grey body coloration with evenly spaced small dark brown dots. The new species has a long sharpened ventral process on the urohyal, an uncommon condition among congeners, and the lowest vertebral count among the large-sized Glanidium, 36-37. It differs from Glanidium albescens by proportional measurements and higher number of ribs. Glanidium botocudo and Glanidium albescens are probably sister species, exhibiting similar morphological features and a complimentary distribution pattern, associated to an allopatric distribution pattern. Glanidium bockmanni is transferred to the genus Centromochlus.Glanidium botocudo, espécie nova, é descrita para tributários do alto rio Doce e rio Mucuri, leste de Minas Gerais, Brasil. Representa o registro mais ao norte de um bagre centromoclíneo nos rios do Nordeste da Mata Atlântica. Glanidium botocudo é prontamente distinguido de todos seus congêneres, exceto Glanidium albescens, pelo colorido cinza-esbranquiçado do corpo com máculas castanho-escuras regularmente espaçadas. A espécie nova apresenta processo ventral do uro-hial longo e afilado, uma condição incomum entre os congêneres, e ainda a menor contagem vertebral entre os Glanidium de grande porte, 36-37. Diferencia-se de Glanidium albescens por proporções corporais e maior número de costelas. Glanidium botocudo e Glanidium albescens são possivelmente espécies irmãs, apresentando características morfológicas similares e padrões de distribuição complementar, associados a um padrão de distribuição alopátrica. Glanidium bockmanni é transferido para o gênero Centromochlus.

The Pedra Dourada Granulite (PDG) occurs at the southeastern portion of the Araçuaí Belt, north of the town of Ponte Nova. It comprises bodies up to 45 km 2 inserted into amphibolite-facies gneisses of the Mantiqueira Complex. Motivated by the discrepancy of metamorphic grade with surrounding rocks, this paper presents results of the petrographic and geochemical investigation of the PDG. The unit is comprised of meta-igneous and metasedimentary rocks. Meta-igneous rocks dominate and include felsic granulites (biotite ± garnet-bearing and orthopyroxene-bearing) and subordinate mafic granulites. Metasedimentary rocks are aluminous granulites with Al-rich mineral assemblages (garnet, sillimanite, spinel). Geochemical data show that most of felsic protoliths are peraluminous rocks including granites, granodiorites and diorites of calc-alkaline character, chemically similar to granitoids of convergent tectonic settings. Mafic protoliths are metaluminous rocks comprised of gabbros and subordinate diorites of tholeiitic affinity, compositionally similar to plate margin basalts. Aluminous protoliths may be peraluminous pelitic rocks and wackes, analogous to sediments from convergent environments. The mineral assemblages indicate that these rocks were metamorphosed under medium-P granulite-facies conditions. Coronitic garnet textures suggest a near-isobaric cooling (IBC-path) after metamorphic peak.

The Araçuaí belts extends along the curved southeastern margin of the São Francisco craton between the Brazilian coast and Lat 21°S, where it merges with the Ribeira belt. It represents the external, basement-involved fold-thrust belt of the Araçuaí-West Congo confined orogen (AWCO), which formed due to the closure of the terminal branch of the Adamastor ocean during the amalgamation of West Gondwana in the Ediacaran and beginning of the Cambrian. Bounded to the east and southeast by the high grade and granitic core of the AWCO, the Araçuaí belt involves a basement assemblage older than 1.8 Ga, the 1.7-0.9 Ga rift to rift-sag successions of the Espinhaço Supergroup, the Tonian-Edicaran rift-passive margin Macaúbas Group, as well as the syn-orogenic Salinas Formation and crustal derived granitic intrusions. The Macaúbas Group, the type unit of the belt, contains a glaciomarine sequence made up of thick diamictites, sandstones and Rapitan-type banded iron formations. The units exposed along the belt were metamorphosed under greenschist to amphibolite facies conditions and affected by thrusts, reverse faults and cratonward verging folds, developed between 575 and 530 Ma. The Araçuaí orogenic front propagates into the craton interior and interacts with preexistent rift structures. This chapter describes the stratigraphic framework and overall structure of the Araçuaí belt, emphasizing the paleogeographic and tectonic significance of its sedimentary and volcanic assemblages.
