Acquired sensory hearing loss (SHL) is suggested to be associated with depression. However, some studies have reported conflicting results. Our study investigated the relationship between the prevalence of SHL and the incidence of depression over 12 years of follow-up by using data from the Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). We sought to determine the association between SHL and subsequent development of depression and discuss the pathophysiological mechanism underlying the association.Patients with SHL were identified from the NHIRD (SHL cohort). A non-SHL cohort, comprising patients without SHL frequency-matched with the SHL patients according to age group, sex, and the year of diagnosis of SHL at the ratio of 1:4, was constructed, and the incidence of depression was evaluated in both cohorts. A multivariable model was adjusted for age, sex, and comorbidity.The SHL cohort and non-SHL cohort comprised 5043 patients with SHL and 20,172 patients without SHL, respectively. The incidences density rates were 9.50 and 4.78 per 1000 person-years in the SHL cohort and non-SHL cohort, respectively. After adjustment for age, sex, and comorbidities, the risk of depression was higher in the SHL cohort than in the non-SHL cohort (hazard ratio = 1.73, 95% confidence interval = 1.49–2.00).Acquired SHL may increase the risk of subsequent depression. The results demonstrated that SHL was an independent risk factor regardless of sex, age, and comorbidities. Moreover, a strong association between hearing loss and subsequent depression among Taiwanese adults of all ages, particularly those aged ≤49 and >65 years and without using steroids for the treatment of SHL was observed. Prospective clinical and biomedical studies on the relationship between hearing loss and depression are warranted for determining the etiopathology.

Purpose: to identify the audiological characteristics of patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Methods: Cross-sectional study in secondary care unit for diabetes in Fortaleza, April-July 2010. The sample comprised 152 patients with type 2 diabetes, regardless of sex, between 36 and 60 years of age. Held pure tone audiometry (PTA), transient-evoked otoacoustic emissions (TEOAE) and distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAE).Results: association of age and time of diagnosis with hearing loss, and the time of diagnosis with the absence of DPOAE. It was observed sensorineural hearing loss in 63.2% of patients, which 71.9% were bilateral and 75% symmetric. Approximately 50% of hearing loss had flat configuration. TOAEs were absent in 75% of the patients and DPOAE in 78.9%. There were no otoacoustic emissions in the presence of normal PTA, on average, 32% of the patients on the right and 48% on the left. The presence of otoacoustic emissions on the occurrence of hearing loss was observed in approximately 30% of patients for TEOAE and 14% for DPOAE on the right; and 25% for TEOAE and 11% for DPOAE on the left. Conclusions: Prevalence of symmetrical bilateral sensorineural hearing loss with a flat configuration, and absence of TEOAE and DPOAE. The association analysis of the results of PTA and OAE suggests loss of outer hair cells of the cochlea or possible auditory neuropathy. These findings justify the hearing monitoring of these patients, as well as conducting specific tests to evaluate the central auditory system. Realizou-se audiometria tonal liminar (ATL), emissões otoacústicas evocadas por estímulo transiente (EOAT) e emissões otoacústicas evocadas-produto de distorção (EOAPD). Resultados: associação da idade e do tempo de diagnóstico com a presença de perda auditiva, e do tempo de diagnóstico com a ausência de EOAPD. Observou-se perda auditiva sensorioneural em 63,2% dos pacientes, das quais 71,9% eram bilaterais e 75% simétricas. Aproximadamente, 50% das perdas auditivas apresentaram configuração plana. As EOAT estavam ausentes em 75% dos pacientes e as EOAPD em 78,9%. Houve ausência de emissões otoacústicas na presença de ATL normal, em média, em 32% dos pacientes à direita e 48% à esquerda. Já a presença de emissões otoacústicas na ocorrência de perda auditiva foi observada em, aproximadamente, 30% dos pacientes para EOAT e 14% para EOAPD à direita; e 25% para EOAT e 11% para EOAPD à esquerda. Introdução: Dentre as doenças crônicas não transmissíveis (DCNT) mais prevalentes, destacam-se o Diabetes Mellitus (DM) e a Hipertensão Arterial Sistêmica (HAS). Estas DCNT se relacionam ao estilo de vida, idade e gênero, e podem estar associadas a alterações audiológicas. Objetivo: Evidenciar os estudos já existentes na literatura a respeito da DM e a HAS e a sua relação com a perda auditiva. Estratégia de pesquisa: As buscas por artigos científicos ocorreram nas bases de dados eletrônicos Medline (Pubmed), LILACS e SciELO. Critério de seleção: Foram incluídos estudos sobre a relação da perda auditiva com a DM e HAS publicados nos últimos cinco anos, e, excluídas revisões de literatura, revisões sistemáticas e meta-análises. Resultados: Foram selecionados nove estudos evidenciando que a DM e/ou a HAS podem ser possíveis fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento da perda auditiva; para isso foram realizadas avaliações e comparações de grupos de pessoas com e sem tais fatores de risco. Outras comorbidades podem ser determinantes para a perda auditiva. Após a análise, verificou-se que existe uma relação entre a HAS, DM e a perda auditiva, principalmente em altas frequências. Não foi observada nenhuma diferença entre as orelhas. Conclusão: Existe relação entre DM e HAS com a perda auditiva, tanto em adultos quanto em idosos. O comprometimento auditivo mostrou-se maior nos sujeitos que apresentavam DM e HAS associados, sugerindo um efeito sinérgico das duas doenças crônicas sobre a audição. A alteração auditiva do tipo neurossensorial prevaleceu.
