Evaluation of vigor and tolerance of sweet corn seeds under hypoxia

Abstract: Evaluation of the physiological potential of seeds by fast and efficient methods is an important step in the process of production and commercialization of sweet corn seeds. The aim of this study was to discriminate sweet corn seed lots by applying multivariate methods regarding the usual vigor tests to verify the sensitivity of these seeds to flood conditions and to verify if the submersion test has potential for classifying lots of this species regarding vigor. Five seed lots of sweet corn were tested for mo… Show more

“…Though drought is the main water stress, sweet corn seeds are sensitive to flooding. However, it is not clear if there is genetic diversity for tolerance to flooding, as multivariate evaluation of the physiological potential of seeds was not efficient for assessing early vigor to verify if the submersion test has potential for classifying seed lots [68].…”

“…YH-5507 and YH-5427 showed maximum kernel yield under heat stress conditions while performance of multinational maize hybrid P-1543 was significantly better under optimal sowing than stress conditions (Figure 7). Biplot analysis has been widely used by many researchers to evaluate different genotypes for different selection criteria (Ali et al, 2015;Hefny et al, 2017;Marinho et al, 2019). In this study, it was used to compute correlation among different kernel yield related parameters and also to classify maize hybrids on the basis of their heat tolerance ability and productivity under stress conditions.…”

“…At the end of the assay (twelve days after sowing), seedling height (hypocotyl + primary root) and root length were determined using a millimeter ruler according to the norms established in the Rules for Seed Testing (Ministério da Agricultura Pecuária e Abastecimento, 2009) and adopted by other authors (Marinho et al, 2019;.…”
