Sweet Corn Research around the World 2015–2020

Abstract: Modern sweet corn is distinguished from other vegetable corns by the presence of one or more recessive alleles within the maize endosperm starch synthesis pathway. This results in reduced starch content and increased sugar concentration when consumed fresh. Fresh sweet corn originated in the USA and has since been introduced in countries around the World with increasing popularity as a favored vegetable choice. Several reviews have been published recently on endosperm genetics, breeding, and physiology that fo… Show more

“…The introduction and industrial use of new sweet maize hybrids, due in particular to their increasing role in healthy nutrition, has led to a broadening of the scope of nutritional testing and research. The authors of [4] provide a high quality summary of the results of the last five years of sweet maize research. After a careful study of the literature sources, no research results were found on the relationship between sweet maize kernel content concentration (mg/kg dry matter) and increasing yield per hectare (kg/t) results.…”

“…Fresh sweet maize is an increasingly popular food mainly because of its high valuable content values and taste [1][2][3]. New results in the precision production of sweet maize are expected, mainly due to its increasing role in healthy nutrition, however, breeding and production technology challenges are also expected in the context of sustainability and climate change [4].…”

“…When HPWMoV was detected in the Great Plains in 1993 and 1994, it was seen in only a few susceptible lines, and these susceptible hybrids were eliminated quickly such that commercial hybrids grown throughout the Great Plains now show resistance to HPWMoV. However, sweet corn hybrids are quite susceptible to HPWMoV, particularly when infected at early growth stages (Revilla et al, 2021 ).…”
