Germination and vigor of stored Jatropha (Jatropha curcars L.) seeds

Abstract: Jatropha seeds are classified as orthodox. However, since it is an oil seed species, adequate storage conditions are required to ensure their longevity. The objective of this work was to evaluate the physiological quality of jatropha seeds stored in different environments and packaging, for periods of 3, 9 and 15 months. Three types of seed packaging bags (high density plastic bag, aluminized envelope and multiwall paper bag) were used, and the storage environments were cold and dry chamber (20 °C and 15% RH, … Show more

“…This phenomenon suggests that the fat is gradually transformed into some organic small molecular substances under the stratification, thereby serving as an energy source and functional foundation for seed dormancy release. Similar studies have previously been carried out on Cornus florida [15] and Jatropha curcars [44].…”

“…It is important to note that the relative water content of non-conventional oilseeds can vary depending on the specific seed. For example, the RWC of J. curcas ranged from 3.3 to 7.7% [26], Camelina sativa ranged from 4-6% [27], and 8-10% for M. oleifera [28]. During the initial stages of seed imbibition, the movement of water is mainly governed by the matric component, which involves the physical properties of the seed [29].…”
