Pollen morphology of 12 salt-tolerant grasses (Calamagrostis pseudophragmites, Cenchrus biflorus, Cenchrus ciliaris, Cenchrus pennisetiformis, Cymbopogon jwarancusa, Dactyloctenium aegyptium, Echinochloa colona, Echinochloa crus-galli, Saccharum griffithii, Saccharum ravennae, Saccharum spontaneum, and Urochloa ramosa) from the Salt Range was studied using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and light microscopy (LM). The main aim was the elucidation of taxonomic significance of pollen morphology, which might be useful for taxonomists in the identification of halophytic Poaceae taxa. The described pollen morphology is a good source of taxonomic characteristics that can help in species and genera differentiation. The investigated variations in the pollen micromorphological features and exploration of new palynological traits support and strengthen the systematics of Poaceae. The pollen shape of all studied species was sub-spheroidal, and exine ornamentation includes microechinate-areolate (11 spp.) and microechinate (1 spp.). Two types of pollen apertures were reported, i.e., monoporate (11 spp.) and diporate (Cenchrus pennisetiformis). The annulus was found in all species while operculum was observed only in three species. The univariate and multivariate analyses were used to analyze the quantitative data. The highest pollen viability values (%) depicted the adaptability of Poaceae taxa in the salt region. Overall, the pollen characteristics in polar and equatorial view, apertures, annulus, operculum, and surface ornamentation of pollen grains of the family Poaceae are of great taxonomic significance for the species identification.

Rutaceae (Sapindales) is represented by approximately 2040 species and 150-170 genera. Conchocarpus is the genus with the highest number of species and is circumscribed by a combination of character states, making it a polymorphic group. A recent study proposed a new genus, Dryades, formed by species formerly positioned in Conchocarpus. This study aims to describe the pollen morphology of Dryades species, comparing it with the palynology of phylogenetically related species, to present data that can characterize the species of Dryades. We analyzed the pollen grains of Dryades species and eight species of the genera Andreadoxa, Angostura, Erythrochiton, Galipea, Rauia and Conchocarpus. The pollen grains were acetolyzed, measured, described qualitatively, and analyzed quantitatively. Illustrations using light microscopy (LM) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) are presented. Multivariate analysis was performed. The pollen grains are monads, isopolar, medium to very large in size, with subcircular to subtriangular amb, and oblate-spheroidal to prolate shape. The apertures are 3-or 5-colporate, varying in size (very small to very large colpi). The endoapertures are usually lalongate, rarely circular. The pollen grains analyzed are microreticulate, reticulate, macroreticulate, reticulate-baculate, baculate or verrucate-baculate. Both qualitative and quantitative characteristics of pollen grains proved to be important in distinguishing genera and grouping species within genera (in particular, the number of apertures, the length of the ectoaperture, the exine ornamentation and the size of the pollen grains). Dryades species show similarities in pollen morphology to species of related genera such as Andreodoxa, Galipea and especially Rauia. The shape of pollen grains and the number of apertures in Dryades are distinct from those found in Conchocarpus macrophyllus. The pollen data observed in this study confirm the pollen diversity of Rutaceae.

Macambira is popularly designated to two species of Bromeliaceae: Bromelia laciniosa and Encholirium spectabile. Both species are xerophilous and have morphological and physiological structures adapted to the semiarid climate. Floristic studies are essential for the knowledge of existing species in certain areas and provide information on diversity, distribution, life forms, and conservation. Sympatry is defined as when two or more populations overlap without crossings between individuals of different species in the same geographical distribution. In this way, the objective of this study was to present the species that occur in sympatry with the macambiras in Serra do Jatobá, municipality of Milagres, Bahia, Brazil. Thirty-seven species belonging to three subfamilies were observed living in sympatry with the macambiras: Bromelioideae (19 spp.), Tillandsioideae (16 spp.), and Pitcairnioideae (2 spp.). The most representative genera of Bromelioideae were Tillandsia (13 spp.) and Hohenbergia (4 spp.). The genera Alcantarea, Bromelia, Cryptanthus, Dyckia, Encholirium, Karawata, and Neoglaziovia, presented only one species each. From the observed species, 70.26% are endemic to Brazil. From these, 32.4% occur exclusively in Bahia. About the status conservation, the species Aechmea disjuncta and Tillandsia milagrensis are considered ‘Endangered’, and Alcantarea nahoumii and Orthophytum rubrum are considered ‘Vulnerable’. The results presented can support conservation studies of these species and, in the future, support the creation of a conservation unit in the inselbergs of Bahia because these environments are maintainers of biodiversity and work as an “oasis” of the Caatinga. Resumo: A macambira é popularmente designada a duas espécies de Bromeliaceae: Bromelia laciniosa e Encholirium spectabile. Ambas as espécies são xerófilas e possuem estruturas morfológicas e fisiológicas adaptadas ao clima semiárido. Estudos florísticos são importantes para o conhecimento das espécies existentes em determinadas áreas e fornecem informações sobre a diversidade, distribuição, formas de vida e conservação. A simpatria é definida quando duas ou mais populações se superpõe sem que ocorram cruzamentos entre indivíduos das diferentes espécies em uma mesma distribuição geográfica. Diante do exposto, o objetivo do trabalho foi apresentar as espécies que ocorrem em simpatria com as macambiras na Serra do Jatobá, município de Milagres, Bahia, Brasil. Foram observadas vivendo em simpatria com as macambiras, 37 espécies pertencentes a três subfamílias: Bromelioideae (19 spp.), Tillandsioideae (16 spp.) e Pitcairnioideae (2 spp.). Os gêneros mais representativos de Bromelioideae foram Tillandsia (13 spp.) e Hohenbergia (4 spp.). Os gêneros Alcantarea, Bromelia, Cryptanthus, Dyckia, Encholirium, Karawata e Neoglaziovia apresentaram apenas uma espécie cada. Das espécies observadas, 70,26% são endêmicas do Brasil. Destas, 32,4% ocorrem exclusivamente na Bahia. Quanto ao nível de ameaça, as espécies Aechmea disjuncta e Tillandsia milagrensis são consideradas ‘Em Perigo’ e Alcantarea nahoumii e Orthophytum rubrum são consideradas ‘Vulneráveis’. Os resultados apresentados podem subsidiar estudos de conservação dessas espécies e, futuramente, apoiar a criação de uma unidade de conservação nos inselbergs da Bahia, pois esses ambientes são mantenedores da biodiversidade e funcionam como “oásis” da Caatinga.
