Behavior of Juvenile and Mature Eucalyptus cloeziana Wood Subjected to Drastic Drying

Abstract: This study aimed to evaluate the behavior of samples of juvenile and mature Eucalyptus cloeziana wood when subjected to the drying process, and the influence of the anatomy on that behavior. In order to do this, saturated specimens from this woods measuring 10 × 5 × 1 cm were subjected to drastic drying at 100 °C, where the drying rates and the end check scores in different steps of the process were obtained. The fibers and vessels morphology, initial moisture and basic density were analyzed to help understand… Show more

“…From the saturation point of the wood fibers until close to 0 % moisture, the output of the adsorbed water was practically the same in the wood of the two clones. The drying curves of both clones showed an exponential trend, as found in studies performed with drastic drying (Barbosa et al 2005, Soares et al 2016, Soares et al 2019.…”

“…Drying schedules have been developed by various authors using this method (Barbosa et al 2005, Ofori and Brentuo 2010, Klitzke and Batista 2010, Batista and Klitzke 2012, Batista et al 2015, Jankowsky et al 2012, Effah and Cofi 2014, Eleotério et al 2015, Soares et al 2016, Soares et al 2019. Those studies confirmed that developed drying schedules shortens times and reduces overall work.…”

“…Valenzuela et al (2012a) analyzed the checks and characteristics of the vessels in 12-year-old E. nitens wood samples and found a higher vessels diameter and higher average area of vessels in the wood with a higher percentage of checks. Soares et al (2019), studying the juvenile wood and the mature wood of E. cloeziana at the age of 37 years, stated that the lower vessel frequency and higher vessel diameter found in mature wood were associated with a lower occurrence of end checks.…”
