Due to the increase in pecan nuts demand, plantation areas are expanding around the world and more frequent epidemics caused by fungal pathogens may occur in orchards and nurseries. Ragnhildiana diffusa is a pathogenic fungus reported to cause brown leaf spots on pecans in numerous countries. The scarcity of comprehensive information in symptoms on the host and morphology of the fungus lead this disease to be initially incorrectly identified in Brazil. In this study, we employed different approaches to characterize the pathogen morphology and pathogenicity and to molecularly identify the organism causing brown leaf spots in southern Brazil. A phylogenetic analysis based on the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) and the large subunit (LSU) gene sequences confirmed R. diffusa as the causal pathogen of the disease. Inoculation tests on healthy leaflets confirmed pathogenicity isolates, although some variation in their virulence was observed. Variation in the morphology of the asexual stage was observed among and within isolates. This study brought unprecedented morphological, genetic and pathogenic information that aids elucidating the disease. The accurate and prompt identification of the disease may assist in controlling further spread of the pathogen into orchards and nurseries still free of the disease in South America.

Juglans regia e Carya illinoinensis, ambas da família Juglandaceae, são espécies de nogueiras conhecidas mundialmente pela produção das chamadas nozes, com crescente expansão da área cultivada na América do Sul. Entretanto, nos últimos anos houve aumento da incidência de doenças nessas espécies, o que compromete a rentabilidade dos cultivos e a qualidade do produto. Colletotrichum nymphaeae foi recentemente identificado no Brasil causando danos em frutos de Juglans regia. Este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o potencial de infecção cruzada de C. nymphaeae, isolado de frutos sintomáticos de Juglans regia, em folíolos e frutos de cultivares de Carya illinoinensis. Para isso, discos de meio de cultura contendo estruturas do patógeno foram depositados sobre folíolos e frutos de seis e três cultivares de Carya illinoinensis, respectivamente. Colletotrichum nymphaeae mostrou-se patogênico tanto em folíolos como em frutos de todas as cultivares avaliadas, sendo que as maiores lesões em folíolos foram observadas nas cultivares ‘Barton’, ‘Melhorada’ e ‘Imperial’, enquanto que a cultivar ‘Shawnee’ demonstrou menor suscetibilidade ao patógeno. Nos frutos, a cultivar ‘Imperial’ mostrou-se mais suscetível ao patógeno, já que apresentou as maiores lesões.

The objective of this study was to determine the pathogenicity of Colletotrichum theobromicola, C. siamense and C. fructicola, C. nympahaeae and C. pseudoacutatum to feijoa, as well as to study the susceptibility/resistance reaction of the commercial cultivars "Alcântara", "Helena", "Mattos", and "Nonante" to anthracnose. For that, spore suspensions (106 spores mL-1) of the Colletotrichum isolates were prepared from colonies grown for seven days in Mathur medium. Ten fruits at the medium stage of development of each cultivar were used for the inoculation of each isolate. First the fruits were disinfested superficially, then they were accommodated in polypropylene trays and the suspension was applied in three places on the fruit's surface, without injury. All those species are pathogenic to feijoa, as they reproduced the original symptoms of anthracnose. The susceptibility of cvs. "Helena" and "Nonante" were influenced by the specific variability of the pathogen. The cv. "Alcântara" is susceptible and cv. "Mattos" is resistant to all tested Colletotrichum species. Thus, cv. "Mattos" is the most suitable feijoa cultivar to reduce anthracnose levels in orchards in a conventional, integrated or organic cultivation system.
