Since 1932, the Common Bean Breeding Program of the Instituto Agronômico (PMGF-IAC) has provided bean cultivars with high yield potential and stability, grain of high technological quality and nutritional value, resistance and tolerance to the main common bean diseases, and commercial acceptance. This article presents the main results of the PMGF-IAC from a study of its research, development, and innovation (RD&I) trajectory and from information regarding adoption of cultivars (from 1932 to 2019). The main contributions of this study are (i) to display the trajectory of RD&I in common bean breeding in IAC, (ii) to present a description of common bean cultivars of different commercial types recommended over the period analyzed, and (iii) to provide an analysis of adoption of the new cultivars. This study is directed to researchers that develop common bean cultivars or that act in the sphere of science, technology, and innovation.

Soybean bacterial pustule is caused by the gram‐negative bacterium Xanthonomas citri pv. glycines. The identification of sources of resistance for use in molecular breeding is a challenge due to the existence of complex interactions between pathogenic strains and soybean cultivars. This study aimed to evaluate the reaction of 118 soybean cultivars to inoculation with strains 2440P and 2447 of X. citri pv. glycines and to identify molecular markers associated with the resistance. The genome‐wide association study approach was used to identify association between the phenotype and the single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNP) markers. The positions of significant SNPs were mapped to the soybean Williams 82 genome, and protein‐coding genes near them were identified. One and 116 cultivars were resistant to strains 2440P and 2447, respectively. Eleven SNPs were significantly associated with resistance to strain 2440P and five to 2447. Two significant SNPs are predicted to result in amino acid changes in benzyl alcohol O‐benzoyltransferase‐like and MAIN‐LIKE 1‐like proteins, which after confirmation, could be used in marker‐assisted selection in order to increase the frequency of resistant alleles in new cultivars.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is among the main crops of national agriculture and can be affected by several diseases. Aiming to develop alternative control methods to chemical control, it was verified the potential of the aqueous extract (AE) from Lentinula edodes in controlling common bean diseases and inducing resistance by the activation of defense enzymes such as peroxidase, catalase and polyphenoloxidase, in addition to evaluating production components. The field experiment consisted of 0, 5%, 10% or 20% acibenzolar-S-methyl (ASM) and fungicide pyraclostrobin treatments as standard treatments. AE was effective in controlling anthracnose at 1% and 5% doses. The activity of all evaluated enzymes was higher at 12 and 24 hours after application of the treatments, with a concentration of 20% standing out. AE at this same dose increased the number of beans per pod and also yield. The aqueous extract of Lentinula edodes at a concentration of 20% is effective in inducing resistance, increasing enzyme levels and increasing yield.
