“…Regarding the second objective, adherence to the MD was low in 26.3%, moderate in 61.6% and high in 12.1% of the participants, in discrepancy with what was reported by Santos Marques et al in 2 villages in Portugal (Porto and Maia), in whose study describes a high adherence to MD in 77.6% of the participants (44) . These differences may be due to the urban environment of these cities and their concern for the promotion of healthy lifestyles, which is different from the rural environment and the lack of clear and welldefined public policies in our case.…”

“…The Mediterranean diet (MD) is considered one of the healthiest dietary patterns in the world, characterized by high consumption of fruits, vegetables, legumes, olive oil, nuts, and cereals, a moderate-high intake of fish, dairy products, and alcohol (mostly wine), and a low intake of saturated lipids, sweets, and red and processed meat [1,2]. Numerous studies have shown that adherence to the MD is associated with a significant reduction in total mortality and improvement in longevity, as well as with various health benefits, including prevention of cardiovascular diseases, neurodegenerative diseases, diabetes type 2, obesity, cancer, and many others [3][4][5][6][7][8].…”

“…Two previous studies support the theory of a positive association between adherence to the MD and sleep duration: one performed in 2020 on 891 Portuguese children attending elementary school (30); and another conducted in Italy in 2017 on 690 greater children from 9 to 11 years old (17). In contrast, a Spanish study on 309 children aged 8-13 years found no such correlation between adherence to the MD and sleep duration (31).…”
