Agronomic Performance of Cowpea Elite Lines in the States of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, Brazil

Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the agronomic performance of erect and semi-erect cowpea elite lines grown in the States of Minas Gerais and Mato Grosso, Brazil. The experiments were conducted in Jaíba, Janaúba, Sete Lagoas (Minas Gerais), Primavera do Leste and Nova Ubiratã (Mato Grosso), with 20 genotypes of cowpea, arranged in a randomized block design with four replications. The data were subjected to individual and joint analyses of variance and means grouped by the Scott-Knott test (p<0.05)… Show more

“…The maximum grain yield, obtained by treatments that were not affected by weed interference corresponded to 1,732 kg ha -1 , and thus, within the expected for the BRS Itaim cultivar, corroborating with the yield values of previous studies in the studied region (Souza et al, 2018). However, with weed interference throughout the cycle, the lowest yield (458 kg ha -1 ) was found, which is close to the national mean yield of 558 kg ha -1 (Conab, 2018).…”

“…Moreover, the results of the present study expand the existing knowledge about the weed community dynamics. Associating them with other research results (Batista et al, 2016;Batista et al 2017;Guerra et al, 2017;Souza et al, 2018) allow an extrapolation for optimizing management practices and increasing the production rates of cowpea in the edaphoclimatic conditions of the semi-arid region of Minas Gerais.…”

“…Asterisk (*) indicates that coefficients are different from zero based on the 95% HDI demonstrating that the cultivar BRS Novaera has greater plasticity than its counterpart cultivar (Figures 2, 3, and 5). Matoso et al (2018) and Souza et al (2018) also found that cultivar BRS Novaera produced greater seed yield relative to the cultivar BRS Guariba when sown in early March in southeastern Brazil. The average across three growing seasons and two cultivars revealed that the AOPD for maximum seed yield of semiupright cowpea cultivars in the fall-winter crop in southeastern Brazil is roughly 259,000 plants ha −1 .…”

“…The potential productivity of cultivar BRS Imponente is over 2,000 kg ha -1 (EMBRAPA, 2016), while those of BRS Itaim, BRS Novaera and BRS Tumucumaque are 1,895, 2,020 and 1,924 kg ha -1 , respectively (Souza et al, 2018). These elevated potential values may be explained by high levels of accumulated rainfall and favorable conditions during the crop cycle (Almeida et al, 2017) and by soil tillage (Cardoso et al, 2017).…”
