Periods of weed interference in cowpea crop in the semi-arid of Minas Gerais, Brazil

Abstract: Weed interference is one of the main limiting factors in the cowpea yield. In this sense, we aimed to determine the periods of weed interference in the cowpea crop in the semi-arid region of Minas Gerais. The treatments were arranged in a 2 x 10 factorial scheme, with two factors: coexistence and control of weed and ten periods: 0, 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49, 56 and 63 days after emergence (DAE) subjected to control and coexistence. The evaluated characteristics were dry weight of weeds and the cowpea, weight o… Show more

“…According to the Brazilian National Food Supply Company, it is estimated that in the 2020/2021 harvest the country had a production of 623,800 Mg of cowpea, grown in an area of approximate 1,349,600 ha -1 , with a mean yield lower than 500 kg ha -1 (CONAB, 2022). This low mean yield can be explained by, among other factors, the presence of weeds, which compete with the crop for water, light, and nutrients, are hosts of pests and diseases, and produce allelopathic substances that compromise the expected productions (LACERDA et al, 2020). These dynamics include direct and indirect factors that characterize the weed interference (SHIRGAPURE; GHOSH, 2020).…”

“…In this way, by applying N fertilizers to increase the productive performance of the common bean crop, one may also increase the competitiveness of weeds in relation to the crop and, consequently, compromise weed control measures. Theoretically, this problem could be solved by replacing N fertilization with inoculation with diazotrophic bacteria (Hungria & Kaschuk, 2014), which could provide the common bean with greater tolerance to coexistence with the weed community and allow a longer period before weed interference (PBI) (Schiessel et al, 2019;Lacerda et al, 2020).…”
