Selection for the Development of Black Eye Cowpea Lines

Abstract: Cowpea bean is a socioeconomically important legume that contribute to generate employment and income. This species presents great grain variability, and the commercial subclass black eye stands out as a very appreciated grain in Brazil and abroad, thus requiring the development of new cultivars. The objective of this work was to evaluate and select lineages of commercial black eye cowpea, based on simultaneous, and direct selection. First, 105 progenies and four controls were evaluated using the Federer's aug… Show more

“…Greenish Black Balady manifested the lowest contents, whereas the Variegate Chinese and Azmerlli genotypes showed the highest contents. These findings comply with (Asante et al., 2020 ; El‐Jasser, 2011 ; Kamara et al., 2018 ; Silva et al., 2018 ). Cowpea genotypes seeds after cooking showed a reduction in ash when compared to uncooked cowpea genotypes seeds.…”

“…This evidences the high efficiency of the simultaneous selection of several traits through the MMI. Silva et al (2018) also found high gains in cowpea through simultaneous selection via the MMI when evaluating 105 cowpea lines with a simple inflorescence.…”

“…path analysis (CREVELARI et al, 2018;CHOTALIYA;KULKARNI, 2017) and selection index (BUZZELLO et al, 2015;CREVELARI et al, 2019). Path analysis partitions the direct and indirect effects of the study variables that influence a key variable of main interest, and the use of a selection index by which the relative merit of a series of progenies can be determined, constituting a basis to differentiate the progenies (CRUZ; REGAZZI; CARNEIRO, 2012) and thus to select the best ones that compose the next selection cycle (LIMA et al, 2018;SILVA et al, 2018).…”
