Early undernutrition as a cause of changes in phonological processing skills

Abstract: Purpose: to determine whether undernutrition in the first years of life affects the phonological awareness skills, the phonological working memory and the school performance of children. Methods: the participants were children with a history of moderate/severe undernutrition during their first years of life (G1) who achieved nutritional recovery (n = 15). The performance of G1 in different cognitive tasks (phonological awareness at the syllable and phoneme level, phonological working memory - repetition of di… Show more

“…AEPs have been applied widely to the examination of the integrity of brainstem nuclei and peripheral auditory pathways. 8 Conduction through the neural pathways has also been seen to be affected by nutritional status as shown by Soury et al 9 The present study observed prolongation of Wave I, II, III, IV, and Prolonged inter-peak latency I-III, I-V with P<0.05 in the SAM group. This may be due to imperfect growth and development of myelin-producing initial abnormalities in an increase in interpeak latency particularly I-III.…”

“…These changes could be attributed to myelination defects in the auditory pathway's neural tissue. Similarly, Zuanetti et al, and Vandana and Tandon 8,10 revealed that conduction through the neural pathways has also been seen to be affected by nutritional status.…”

“…The studies in the literature regarding risk factors for language and/or arithmetic skills have mostly analyzed one variable at a time, e.g. studies on prematurity, 9 , 10 severe malnutrition in the first years of life 11 or resources present at home, 12 , 13 among others. However, few studies have analyzed which variables out of these many factors are the most likely to impair linguistic and mathematical development.…”
