Selection of cotton genotypes for yield and fiber quality under water stress

Abstract: The objective of this work was to select a cotton line tolerant to water stress, based on yield and fiber quality characteristics. A total of nine cotton genotypes were evaluated (six breeding lines and three commercial cultivars) in two field experiments conducted in Quixeramobim - CE without water supplementation in 2018 and 2019, respectively. Traits related to cotton lint yield and intrinsic fiber quality were measured. Data were submitted to individual and joint analysis of variance, and selection by the … Show more

“…The reduction of photosynthetic activity caused by water stress can directly affect biomass accumulation in cotton plants. According to Gomes et al [35], cotton has distinct characteristics, varying according to the genotype, which responds differently to local water conditions. The number of bolls was similar among the three genotypes of colored cotton in the first experiment (Figure 8), and there were decreases of 37.51 and 60.09% caused by irrigation with a water deficit in the vegetative and flowering stages (T 6 -A 2 B 2 C 1 ) in the genotypes 'BRS Jade' and 'BRS Rubi', respectively, compared to plants under full irrigation (100% ETr-T 1 ).…”
