Structure of the mouthparts and alimentary canal of Eusomus ovulum Germar, 1824 (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Abstract: The structural morphology of mouthparts, the distribution of sensilla on the mouthparts, histology, and the morphology of the alimentary canal in adult Eusomus ovulum Germar, 1824 were examined under both light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The mouthparts are located at the tip of the short rostrum. The mandibles, the maxillae and the labial palpi comprise the moveable mouthparts. “…In Pterostichus niger (Schaller, 1783) (Carabidae), posterior surface of proventriculus has teeth shaped small denticles. In proventriculus of Pterostichus madidus (Fabricius, 1775) (Carabidae), there are usually 7-teeth combs (Forsythe, 1982) (Bu & Chen, 2009;Candan et al, 2019;Candan, Özyurt Koçako glu, Güllü, & Ça glar, 2020;De Sousa, Scudeler, Abrahão, & Conte, 2013;Koçako glu et al, 2020). The proventiculus in C. sycophanta (Carabidae), intima is densely covered with long plumose setae (Candan, Özyurt Koçako glu, & Serttaş, 2020).…”

“…Midgut cells have a microvilli and secretion activity which are responsible for the absorption and the synthesis of various elements (Herve & Heat, 2011;Snodgrass, 1935;Terra, Ferreira, & Baker, 1996;Terra, Ferreira, Jordao, & Dillon, 1996). The midgut in C. sycophanta (Carabidae) and E. ovulum (Curculionidae) (Candan et al, 2019;Candan, Özyurt Koçako glu, Güllü, & Ça glar, 2020;Candan, Özyurt Koçako glu, & Serttaş, 2020;Koçako glu et al, 2020;Rubio et al, 2008;Schaefer, 1931;Singh & Prasad, 2013). However, the midgut of C. asparagi (Chrysomelidae) consists of anterior, mid and posterior parts (Davidson, 1931).…”
