Effect of Pyrolysis Heating Rate on the Chemical Composition of Wood Vinegar From Eucalyptus Urograndis and Mimosa Tenuiflora

Abstract: Among the parameters used in the biomass carbonization process, the heating rate is one of the most important. The objective of the present work was to assess the influence of different heating rates on the chemical composition of wood vinegar (WV) from two wood species. Dried disks of Eucalyptus grandis and Mimosa tenuiflora wood were used as raw material. Carbonization runs were carried out in a laboratory muffle furnace at three heating rates (0.7, 1.0 and 1.4 °C/min), with 10 runs at each heating rate, rea… Show more

“…According to some studies, acetic acid, 2-methoxyphenol (guaiacol), and 2,6-dimethoxyphenol (syringol) are the major compounds present in wood vinegar with pesticide, insecticide, and herbicidal activities [ 47 , 48 , 49 ]. Furthermore, several water-soluble mono- and oligophenols such as 2-methoxyphenol, 2,6-dimethoxyphenol, and 2-methylphenol (cresol) are the major phenols that are present in the bio-oil distillate and these have been reported to have significant antifungal activity as pesticides [ 45 , 50 , 51 ]. The presence of these active compounds in the industrial hemp distillate fractions, at such high concentrations, indicates that hemp distillates have similar or even more potent antibacterial, antifungal, and other pesticide properties when compared to many other lignocellulosic biomasses.…”
