Rootstock on vine performance and wine quality of ‘Syrah’ under double pruning management

Abstract: In the Brazilian Southeast, the production of high quality wines is attained by a new management approach called double pruning. This management changes the harvesting of wine grape (Vitis vinifera L.) from wet summer to dry winter through a two pruning procedures carried out during the year. The first pruning is done during the winter to induce a vegetative cycle (all clusters are removed) and a second pruning is done during the summer to induce the reproductive cycle. In this study, ten different rootstocks … Show more

“…Despite differences observed for the cluster weight, in both cycles, the cluster number had greater effect on yield compared to other components, also observed by Clingeleffer et al (2001) and Dias et al (2017). However, even with higher cluster counts in 2018, yields were not higher compared to the 2017 cycle due to lower cluster and berry weights.…”

“…These results disagree with Orlando et al (2008) which achieved higher yields on 'Syrah' grapevines grafted on IAC 572. Dias et al (2012) mentioned that there were no effects of the SO4, 110 Richter and 1103 Paulsen rootstocks on the yield of 'Syrah' in the South of Minas Gerais, but in another study in this same region, the IAC 766 rootstock increased yield and cluster number in 'Syrah' compared to other rootstocks including 1103 Paulsen and SO4 (Dias et al, 2017). The different results obtained with the same cultivar demonstrate that the responses to the rootstocks depend on the interaction of several factors such as the edaphoclimatic conditions of the producing region, vineyard management, and vine age, among others.…”

“…The grapevines were grafted on Paulsen 1103 rootstock, grown in a vertical espalier system, and trained using the unilateral Royat cordon system. Moreover, the grapevines were subjected to double pruning management (Dias et al, 2017) with the aim of taking the crop into autumn and winter seasons when the climate conditions are more favorable for fruit maturation. Vineyard irrigation was performed using a drip system, with one lateral drip line per plant row and two emitters per plant, placed 0.50 m apart and with an average flow of 1.88 L h -1 .…”
