Overexpression of S100A4 as a biomarker of metastasis and recurrence in oral squamous cell carcinoma

Abstract: S100A4, a biomarker of epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT), plays an important role in invasion and metastasis by promoting cancer cell motility. In oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC), metastasis results in 90% of cancer associated mortality.ObjectiveTo investigate the role of S100A4 expression as an important component of the epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT) program in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC).Material and MethodsS100A4 protein expression was assessed semi-quantitatively by immunohistoc… Show more

“…Interestingly, S100A8/A9 were found to be up-regulated in cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma compared to premalignant skin lesions (49). Enhanced S100A4 expression in combination with a decreased expression of S100A8/A9 in OSCCs indicates a potentially aggressive behavior of OSCCs (27,28,32,39).…”

“…A high level of S100A4 protein promotes a migratory phenotype, epithelialmesenchymal transition (EMT) and is therefore conducive to metastasis formation (23,(28)(29)(30)(31). In oral squamous cell carcinoma, S100A4 was also found to be involved and positively correlated with metastasis (32,33).…”

“…FAM107B protein shares 65% sequence similarity with FAM107A, the other member of FAM107, in their N-terminal DUF1151 regions (Nakajima et al, 2010). The increased S100A4 expression was closely correlated with invasion, lymph node metastasis, and poor prognosis of gastric cancer (Li et al, 2013;Natarajan et al, 2014;Niu et al, 2015). Functional analysis in vitro showed that forced expression of HITS protein suppresses the responses of Hela cells to growth factors (Nakajima et al, 2010).…”

“…S100A4 can influence various biological characteristics of several different kinds of cancer cells (Cheng et al, 2016;Qi et al, 2016;Zhang et al, 2016). The increased S100A4 expression was closely correlated with invasion, lymph node metastasis, and poor prognosis of gastric cancer (Li et al, 2013;Natarajan et al, 2014;Niu et al, 2015). Recently, we analyzed the differentially expressed gene profile after S100A4 inhibition in gastric cancer cells MGC803 by cDNA microarray and identified 179 differentially expressed genes (Guo et al, 2016).…”

“…The S100A4 protein occurs as noncovalently bound homodimers with the ability to interact with an array of target proteins in a calcium-dependent manner (1). S100A4 overexpression has been reported in several types of cancer and is associated with invasion and metastasis and poor patient prognosis (2)(3)(4). Many studies have confirmed that S100A4 is involved in a variety of biological effects.…”
