Different studies have shown that insect meals can partially or completely replace the fish and soya bean meals that are commonly used in aquaculture. However, information is lacking on the amino acid and fatty acid contents and digestibility of different insect meals. Moreover, we evaluated different proportions of insect diets and determined how these affected the nutritional values of insect meals. Our purpose was to clarify these aspects and consider the availability of protein, amino acids, lipids and fatty acids in insect meals in fish nutrition. Generally, insect meals have higher indispensable amino acid contents than other meal types, with contents closely related to those in fish meal. Insect meal can be an important source of essential amino acids such as methionine, with contents ranging between 0.47 and 4.03 g 100 g À1 sample. These values are higher than those reported for other animal and plant meals. In addition, insects are also good sources of lipids and fatty acids, and the amounts and types of fatty acids vary according to the species, stage of development and type of feed. Moreover, the additional nutritional value of insect meal includes compounds such as chitin, which is primarily considered a fibre but also contains nitrogen and amino acids. Insect peptides with activity against pathogenic microflora provide secondary biological effects, which may significantly improve animal health.

Aim: To evaluate the fish feeding and to establish the preferential and secondary items of their diets, to determine the trophic guilds and the possible trophic structure variations in function of the water volume in Umari reservoir, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazilian semiarid. Methods: The fish were captured quarterly between February and November of 2013, with gill nets with different meshes, being the apparatuses exposed at 5:00 p.m., with removal at 5:00 a.m. The food items were identified using stereoscopic and optical microscopes and evaluated through the Feeding Index (IAi), being the results of this procedure used in food similarity analysis. The volume of the items was orderly in NMDS and the time differences were tested in PERMANOVA. Results: A total of 740 individuals belonging to 14 species were sampled, being analyzed a total of 258 stomachs and 8 intestines of 11 species. From the IAi values used in the trophic similarity analysis, the species were classified into five trophic guilds: detritivorous, insectivorous, malacophagous, carcinophagous and piscivorous. Conclusion: The oscillation in the water volume of the reservoir did not influence the diet of the guild detritivorous, which shows that the variations in the volume of water of the reservoir do not influence in the same way the diet of the local ichthyofauna.

Resumo: Em ambientes sazonalmente alagáveis, os hábitos alimentares demonstrados pela comunidade íctica são reflexos da disponibilidade de recursos no meio e da adaptabilidade das espécies às condições ambientais. Nesse sentido, este trabalho apresenta uma revisão sobre os principais métodos adotados para análise da dieta das assembleias de peixes em várzeas de rios brasileiros, além de uma revisão dos hábitos alimentares, plasticidade trófica e o efeito da sazonalidade na dieta. A avaliação da dieta das espécies de peixes nesses ambientes pode ser realizada a partir de diferentes metodologias de análise do conteúdo estomacal e índices obtidos a partir desses resultados. Para avaliar os procedimentos mais utilizados na análise dos dados de alimentação natural de peixes por pesquisadores da área, foi feita uma revisão bibliográfica de artigos publicados entre 1990 a 2018. Verificou-se que um dos métodos mais frequentes foi o volumétrico e a maioria das publicações não empregaram índices. Além disso, as informações obtidas a partir de estudos sobre dieta dos peixes que habitam as várzeas evidenciaram uma ampla plasticidade alimentar, a qual pode decorrer de variações espaciais e temporais, que alteram a estrutura e a dinâmica das assembleias de peixes, levando a uma grande versatilidade na exploração dos recursos alimentares. Palavras-chave: alimentação natural; guildas tróficas; lagoa marginal; método volumétrico; sazonalidade. FOOD HABITS IN FRESHWATER FISH: A REVIEW ON STUDIES IN BRAZILIAN FLOODPLAIN. In seasonally flooded environments, the dietary habits demonstrated by the fish community reflect the availability of resources in the environment and the adaptability of species to environmental conditions. In this sense, this work presents a review on the main methods adopted to analyze the diet of fish assemblages in floodplains of Brazilian rivers, as well as a review of dietary habits, trophic plasticity and the effect of seasonality on the diet. The evaluation of the diet of the fish species in these environments can be carried out from different methodologies of analysis of the stomach contents and indices obtained from these results. In order to evaluate the most used procedures in the analysis of natural fish feeding data by researchers in the area, a bibliographic review and a survey of articles published between 1990 and 2018 were carried out. One of the most frequent methods was the volumetric and most publications did not employ indexes. In addition, the information obtained from studies on the diet of the fish that inhabit the floodplains showed wide food plasticity, which may be due to spatial and temporal variations that alter the structure and dynamics of fish assemblages, leading to a large versatility in the exploitation of food resources.
