ABSTRACT. Trophic structure of the ichthyofauna in a Brazilian semiarid reservoir. The establishment of the trophic structure of fi sh provides information on species autoecology and their role in the ecosystem, in addition to supporting conservation and management practices for sustainable use of native species. In the semiarid region of Rio Grande do Norte there are few studies of the natural diet of fi sh. In this context, this study aimed to characterize the trophic structure of the fi sh assemblage of the Santa Cruz reservoir, Apodi, state of Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. Fish were collected quarterly (February, May, August and November) in eight points in the reservoir in 2011. After screening, biometric identifi cation and analysis, stomach or intestinal contents were analyzed and food items identifi ed were used for the calculation of the frequency of occurrence and volumetric whose association gives the Alimentary Index (IAi). The highest consumption of a particular item grouped the species into fi ve trophic guilds, and the detritivore/iliophagous, insectivore and carcinophagous the most abundant in the months and collection points, compared to herbivorous and piscivorous. The high abundance of individuals in these guilds can be explained by opportunistic species and the capture facility and intake of resources, since detritus/sediment, insects and shrimp are abundant in the environment studied. Thus, this study provided information about the items that contribute to the diet species, making it possible to infer about the interactions, allowing in the future to understand the complexity of trophic relationships and to assist the management practices and conservation of environment.KEYWORDS. Na região semiárida do Rio Grande do Norte existem poucos trabalhos sobre a alimentação natural de peixes. Neste contexto, o presente estudo visou caracterizar a estrutura trófi ca da assembleia de peixes do reservatório de Santa Cruz, Apodi, Estado do Rio Grande do Norte, Brasil. Aim: To evaluate the fish feeding and to establish the preferential and secondary items of their diets, to determine the trophic guilds and the possible trophic structure variations in function of the water volume in Umari reservoir, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazilian semiarid. Methods: The fish were captured quarterly between February and November of 2013, with gill nets with different meshes, being the apparatuses exposed at 5:00 p.m., with removal at 5:00 a.m. The food items were identified using stereoscopic and optical microscopes and evaluated through the Feeding Index (IAi), being the results of this procedure used in food similarity analysis. The volume of the items was orderly in NMDS and the time differences were tested in PERMANOVA. Results: A total of 740 individuals belonging to 14 species were sampled, being analyzed a total of 258 stomachs and 8 intestines of 11 species. From the IAi values used in the trophic similarity analysis, the species were classified into five trophic guilds: detritivorous, insectivorous, malacophagous, carcinophagous and piscivorous. Conclusion: The oscillation in the water volume of the reservoir did not influence the diet of the guild detritivorous, which shows that the variations in the volume of water of the reservoir do not influence in the same way the diet of the local ichthyofauna.
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of a supraseasonal drought on the ecological attributes of Plagioscion squamosissimus. The fish were caught quarterly from February 2010 to November 2014 using gill nets in the reservoir of Santa Cruz, Rio Grande do Norte, Brazil. The abundance of the species was evaluated with the catch per unit effort (CPUE) metric and then correlated with the accumulated rainfall and water volume of the reservoir. The diet of the fish was evaluated using the feeding index (IAi). The proportional similarity index (PSi) was used to evaluate the variation in the niches of the fish. The body condition was inferred through the relative condition factor, and its variation was assessed with ANOVA. A reduction in the abundance of the species that were positively correlated with the reservoir water volume was observed. The diet of the fish comprised shrimp, gastropods, fish, insects, shrimp larvae, and vegetable matter, with shrimp being the major component. PSi showed the occurrence of individual specialization during November 2013 and November 2014. The relative condition factor was not correlated with a reduction in the water volume of the reservoir. The supraseasonal drought did not affect the relative condition factor, diet, and the trophic niche, but it did affect the species abundance.
ABSTRACT. Temporal and spatial variation in diet Trachelyopterus galeatus (Siluriformes, Auchenipteridae) in two reservoirs in the semi-arid Neotropical. Fish feeding provides data for discussion of theoretical aspects serving purposes as the basic knowledge of the biology of a species by understanding the trophic organization in each environment. The objective was to analyze the food composition and morphology associated with the eating habits of Trachelyopterus galeatus (Linnaeus, 1766) and evaluates the dietary changes over time. The collections of individuals took place on a quarterly basis, during the months of February, May, August and November 2013, through gillnets with different meshes distributed in eight points in the Santa Cruz reservoir and five points in the Umari reservoir, both located in the Rio Grande do Norte. From the items identified in diets were obtained the frequencies of occurrence and volumetric, combined in the calculation of Alimentary Index (IAi). The volumes of the items were ordered in NMDS and their differences tested by PERMANOVA. The contribution of each food item and differences between reservoirs was assessed by SIMPER analysis. The analysis of stomach contents allowed the classification of the species as carnivorous, noting there are significant temporal changes in the species diet, with the morphological characteristics according to the consumption of food items.KEYWORDS. Assim, objetivou-se analisar a composição alimentar e a morfologia, associadas ao hábito alimentar de Trachelyopterus galeatus (Linnaeus, 1766) e avaliar as alterações da dieta ao longo do tempo. As coletas dos indivíduos ocorreram trimestralmente, durante os meses de fevereiro, maio, agosto e novembro de 2013, por meio de redes de esperas com diferentes malhas distribuídas em oito pontos no reservatório de Santa Cruz e em cinco pontos no reservatório de Umari, ambos localizados no Rio Grande do Norte. Dos itens identificados da dieta foram obtidas as frequências de ocorrência e volumétrica, combinadas no cálculo de Índice Alimentar (IAi). Studies focusing the biology of annual fish are still scarce, and in the case of threatened species, research, as well as the adoption of protective measures for these populations, are needed. We present herein the first record of Hypsolebias antenori (Cyprinodontiformes: Cynolebiidae) in temporary pools of Lajedo de Soledade, located in a semiarid region, in Northeastern Brazil. Five individuals (two males and three females) were captured in three temporary pools in May 2017. For the capture, a sieve (50 x 50 cm) with a 4 mm of mesh size was used. The males showed a total length ranging from 3.5 to 4.7 cm (average: 4.1 cm) and body mass amplitude between 0.38 to 0.94 g (average: 0.66 g). The females had a total length from 3.5 to 3.9 cm (average: 3.67 cm) and body mass amplitude of 0.55 to 0.70 g (average: 0.64). Considering that the collection area is one of the most important archaeological sites in Brazil, this endemic species of Caatinga demonstrates the importance of conservation of the environment and serves to support the preservation of the present area that is not recognized and registered as cultural and environmental patrimony.
The knowledge of the fish trophic structure has been outstanding for providing relevant information on the functioning of the ecosystem in which they are inserted, mainly in dammed environments of semiarid regions that suffer constant changes in the level of water, resulting in alterations, especially in the feeding of the fish due to the variation of the food resources throughout the year, causing changes in the diet of the local ichthyofauna. Within this context, the objective was to describe the trophic categories of fish species in freshwater environments of the Rio Grande do Norte state. Seven trophic guilds were recorded: Detritivore/iliophagous, Insectivorous, Carcinophagous, Piscivorous, Herbivorous and Omnivorous. Through the results, it is observed that the fish species inserted in different environments of the state present the same food pattern, demonstrating flexibility on the diet, prevailing a generalist alimentary habit.
