Antioxidant activities and lutein content of 11 marigold cultivars (Tagetes spp.) grown in Thailand

Abstract: Antioxidant activities and total phenolic content (TPC) were analyzed in ethanol extracts of 11 marigold cultivars grown in Thailand. Antioxidant activity assays performed in this study were the 2,2'-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) (ABTS) radical cation scavenging activity, ferric ion reducing antioxidant power (FRAP), 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging activity, oxygen radical absorbance activity (DRAC), and superoxide anion radical scavenging activity (SRSA) assays. “…Generally speaking, flowers of T. erecta showed a great variability regarding the phenolic content. For example, some studies reported higher TPC values than our data [5,23] while others showed lower ones [6,24] and others found values in the same range [25]. The study carried out by Li et al deserves a particular mention [23].…”

“…Lutein is known for its antioxidant activity. 7 The cytochrome P450 enzymes are the main players in Phase I metabolism and also involved in the oxidation and elimination of a wide array of xenobiotics such as drugs and toxins. 8 A number of therapeutic agents such as quinidine, vinblastine, ergotamine, berberine, and colchicines synthetic agents such as nifedipine and diazepamare the main substrates of CYP3A4.…”
