Genetic control of aluminum tolerance in tropical maize germplasm

Abstract: greater variability associated with the estimates of the SCA for both germplasm. The diallel crosses involving the V 06 (Dente de Ouro 2) landrace stood out by high SCA and GCA for Al tolerance. The generation mean analysis indicated quantitative inheritance of Al tolerance in this germplasm, with most of the variance explained by the additive effects. The heritability in the narrow sense varied from 47% to 71%, indicating the possibility of genetic gain with the selection of tolerant genotypes in F 2 generati… Show more

“…The inheritance of quantitative characters is complex, and many genes has a minor contribution to the phenotype. Inheritance of quantitative characters is generally studied by estimating population parameters (Rosmaina et al 2016;Candido et al 2017;Rohaeni and Yunani 2017;Coelho et al 2019).…”

“…Maron et al (2010), Guimarães et al (2014), Matonyei et al (2017), and Matonyei et al (2020) revealed that this genomic region (ZmMATE1) explains most of the phenotypic variation of Al tolerance in Cateto maize. The greater tolerance observed in the germplasm of landrace maize in the present study could also be directly related to the presence of the same genes coming from the Cateto breed of maize, a germplasm that is very common in the region these landrace varieties of maize were collected (Coelho et al 2018).…”

“…Quantitative traits have complex inheritance, conditioned by many genes with small individual effects, and are greatly affected by the environment. In these cases, the inheritance and variation of traits are studied on the population level through estimation of genetic parameters (Candido et al 2017, Rohaeni and Yunani 2017, Sakulphrom et al 2017, Coelho et al 2019. Cabral et al (1997) reported that segregations for leaf types was in accordance with the frequencies expected from the Collins and Kerns (1946) 2-gene model, with the Primavera cv.…”
