Genetic control of leaf spinescence in BRS Imperial, Pérola, and Pico de Rosa pineapple cultivars

Abstract: Leaf spinescence in pineapple plants was evaluated in a total of 2.014 F1 individuals as follows: 1.125 plants of the progeny of the Imperial BRS cv. × Pérola cv. cross, and 889 plants of the progeny of the Pico de Rosa cv. × BRS Imperial cv. cross. The genetic hypothesis with two loci and epistatic interaction of the piping (P) over spiny (S) trait was tested. The chi-square test was performed on deviations between the observed and expected numbers based on the genetic hypotheses formulated. The "BRS Imperial… Show more

“…The spines along the leaves have a homozygous recessive allele (ss), while non-spine leaves have a heterozygous allele (Ss), the homozygous dominant allele (SS) has spine leaf tips (Collins 1968;Sripaoraya 2009). The results of a recent study by Junior et al (2021) reported that the spine character on the leaves are controlled by two loci, each of which had a pair of alleles, where the spineless leaf had the genotype "Ppss" heterozygous P locus and homozygous recessive s locus. Spiny leaf has three phenotypes of spiny along with the leaf (ppss), Spiny-tip (ppSS), piping/spineless (PpSS; PpSs; Ppss) Urasaki et al 2015).…”

“…Generally, the Smooth cayenne cultivar has a conical shape, while the Queen cultivar has a cylindrical fruit shape with a slightly tapered tip to a sharp point. The conical shape is the most preferred in the market (Junior et al 2021). Bubur genotype is the only type that has a short neck.…”

“…A total of 1,125 F 1 genotypes from seeds (sexual cycle) of the 'BRS Imperial' × 'Pérola' progeny were evaluated. This cross was developed by the IPA plant breeding program via controlled pollinations (Lira Júnior et al 2021a), according to the technical recommendations of Cabral et al (2009a). Notably, the parent cultivars of this progeny have a differential response for fusariosis resistance: 'Pérola' is susceptible and 'BRS Imperial' is resistant.…”

“…In Brazil, development of pineapple cultivars has focused on the recombination of genes that control qualitative characteristics, such as spineless leaf margins (Lira Júnior et al 2021a) and fusariosis resistance (Cabral et al 1997, Junghans et al 2005, that exhibit a weak effect or no effect from the environment. Considering the extensive area of pineapple cultivation in Brazil, as well as the different regional cultivation systems, characteristics of a quantitative nature should be included in selection strategies, as they are greatly affected by environmental factors and their variations over the years.…”
