The objective of this work was to evaluate the morphogenetic, structural, physiological, and productive traits of forage peanut (Arachis pintoi) subjected to different levels of artificial shading in the field. The 'Amarillo MG-100' forage peanut was planted in April 2015, and the evaluations were carried out from May 2017 to April 2018. The treatments were: 0, 30, 45, and 75% of artificial shading. There was no significant effect of shading on the morphogenetic traits of forage peanut. Shading increased final leaf length and canopy height and decreased the leaf area index and number of stolons. Photosynthesis, transpiration rate, stomatal conductance, chlorophyll b, and leaf temperature increased quadratically as a function of shading. There was a linear positive effect on the growing cycle length and a quadratic effect on the production of dry matter mass, with the maximum at 30% shade. Forage peanut harvested at 95% light interception (11-cm height) shows adaptation to shading up to 45%, with increased leaf size, canopy height, photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate, and chlorophyll b. In addition, plants at 30% shading show a higher yield than those growing under full sun.

Este trabalho objetivou definir o impacto da presença de amendoim-forrageiro (Arachis pintoi cv. Belmonte) na resposta da missioneira-gigante (Axonopus catharinensis Valls) ao sombreamento. O trabalho foi realizado em Campos Novos, Santa Catarina, e foram testados quatro níveis de sombreamento artificial (0, 25, 50 e 75%) combinados com dois sistemas de cultivo (missioneira-gigante em monocultivo ou em consórcio com amendoim-forrageiro). As avaliações através de cortes sucessivos ocorreram nos períodos de 13 de novembro de 2019 a 2 de julho de 2020 e de 23 de novembro de 2020 a 13 de julho de 2021. Foram avaliados a densidade de perfilhos, o comprimento de colmo e de pseudocolmo, o comprimento do perfilho estendido, o comprimento de folha, o estrato de folha livre de bainha, as clorofilas a, b e total, a produção de forragem e a relação folha: colmo, a área média de folhas por perfilho, o número de folhas por perfilho e a área média das folhas. O consórcio com o amendoim-forrageiro não contribuiu com as respostas da missioneira-gigante ao sombreamento artificial. A gramínea reduziu a produção de forragem e apresentou alterações estruturais significativas apenas sob sombreamento intenso.

Rotational grazing management of forage peanut

The perennial forage peanut is a stoloniferous, perennial tropical legume with potential for use in pastures. Based on the hypothesis that under intermittent stocking herbage accumulation would follow a similar pattern to that described for tropical forage grasses, the objective of this study was to evaluate canopy characteristics and herbage accumulation of forage peanut subjected to strategies of rotational grazing management. Treatments corresponded to all possible combinations of two grazing frequencies (regrowth interrupted at 95% and maximum canopy light interception – LI95% and LIMax) and two grazing severities (post-grazing canopy heights (CHs) equivalent to 40 and 60% of the pre-grazing heights). Treatments were imposed to experimental units during an adaptation period (from November 2014 to January 2015) and the subsequent experimental period lasted from February 2015 to April 2016, comprising two consecutive pasture growing seasons with no interruption between them (summer I to summer II). The pre-grazing targets of LI95% and LIMax corresponded to CHs of 13 and 18 cm, respectively. Forage peanut showed high grazing tolerance as pre-grazing leaf area index (except during summer I and autumn/winter), total herbage, and leaflet dry matter accumulation varied only with seasons. Higher rates of herbage production were recorded during summer I and summer II, followed by those during late and early spring and autumn/winter. Since there was no difference in the pattern of herbage accumulation between LI95% and LIMax and stolons predominated at the bottom of the canopies, forage peanut may be rotationally grazed with greater flexibility than most tropical forage grasses. Recommended pre-grazing CHs are within 13 and 18 cm, and post-grazing heights between 40 and 60% of the pre-grazing height.
