Abstract: Heparin induced thrombocytopenia (HIT) is a serious complication of heparin anticoagulation and is associated with formation of anti-platelet factor 4. It usually occurs from the fifth day of treatment onwards, with a fall in platelet count of at least 50%. Venous or arterial thrombosis may occur as a result of concomitant platelet activation, with serious clinical repercussions. We present the case of a patient with antiphospholipid antibody syndrome who presented with acute arterial occlusion and was treated… Show more

“…It should be noted that use of non-synthetic heparins can be related to heparin-induced thrombocytopenia, which is a rare, but severe, adverse event. 27 Despite the progress that has been achieved, amputation rates in the range of 10 to 30% and perioperative mortality (30 days) of around 15% are still very high. 13 Although the majority of the patients treated at the service have a more severe clinical classification, the rates observed in this study are comparable to data in the literature.…”

“…Hemorrhagic events in critical patients are reason of concern because, depending on their origin and the volume of blood involved, they may potentiate the hemodynamic and ventilatory instability, increase risk of death and length of stay in the intensive care unit, and require interventions (1) .…”

“…Most invasive devices used in intensive care are inserted and manipulated by nurses in daily basis. In this sense, it is necessary that nurses seek solutions to contribute to reduce the occurrence of these adverse events, increasing safety and minimizing the negative impact on the patient, the nursing team and the institution (1,4) .…”
