Subterranean biodiversity in the Serra da Bodoquena karst area, Paraguay river basin, Mato Grosso do Sul, Southwestern Brazil

Abstract: We present herein a synthesis of faunistic data from caves in the Serra da Bodoquena karst area, middle Paraguay River basin, Mato Grosso do Sul State. Those include phreatic, submerged and dry caves. Emphasis is given to troglobites (exclusively subterranean species), potentially threatened due to their morphological, physiological and behavioral specializations, associated to generally small distributions. The Bodoquena karst area distinguishes as a spot of high diversity of troglobites, such as trichomycter… Show more

“…Serra da Bodoquena consists of a north‐south carbonatic plateau of Neoproterozoic age, Corumbá Group, extending for approximately 200 km, of width varying between 10 and 70 km, that forms an important water divide in the Paraguay Belt, related to the development of the Cenozoic Pantanal Basin, which is still subsiding within the limits of the Paraguay Basin (Almeida, ; Boggiani, Fairchild & Coimbra, ; Cordeiro, Borghezan & Trajano, ). The climate is classified as Aw, tropical, with a wet summer and a dry winter (Justo, ).…”

“…isbrueckeri from the families Crenuchidae and Loricariidae, respectively, both of which are listed at Brazilian law as Data Deficient (DD) (data published by ICMBio 2014) due to low numbers of recorded occurrences or absence in study samples. Ancistrus formoso and Trichomycterus dali are the only encountered species listed as vulnerable, likely a result of its limited distribution due to restriction to cave habitats in the karst environments of the Serra da Bodoquena (Cordeiro et al 2014); the restricted range and the frequent change of the landscape to harbor crop fields in the region represent a great menace to these species. The Miranda River Basin seems to offers sufficient resources to maintain numerous species, in particular species of concern with respect to conservation.…”
