ABSTRACT. Checklist of the Ichthyofauna from Mato Grosso do Sul state, Brazil. The freshwater fi shes of Mato Grosso do Sul state are distributed in two Prata basin sub-basins, Paraguay and Upper Paraná. The species list for that state was compiled based on Collection records, literature and consultation with other ichthyologists. The list includes 358 species, belonging to eleven orders and 43 families. For the Paraguay basin, 255 species were listed; 201 were registered in the Upper Paraná basin. At least 100 species are present in the two watersheds. Of those, 49 species are indigenous to the two basins. Among the other shared species, three were introduced into both basins and 45 are native to the Paraguay and/or Middle Parana basins and were intentionally or inadvertently introduced into the Upper Paraná basin. Nearly one third o f the species registered in the Upper Parana basin (64), in Mato Grosso do Sul were introduced, whereas introductions in the Paraguay basin correspond to 1.2% of the species listed. The number of species presented in this paper is considered to be low, representing the still incomplete knowledge, specially of the headwater regions, but also of the lowlands of the Pantanal. Threats to this ichthyofauna and aspects of its conservation status are also discussed.KEYWORDS. Paraguay River basin, upper Parana River basin, fi sh, species list, Biota-MS Program.RESUMO. Os peixes de água doce do estado de Mato Grosso do Sul se distribuem em duas sub-bacias da bacia do Prata, Paraguai e Alto Paraná. A lista das espécies de peixes que ocorrem no estado de Mato Grosso do Sul foi compilada com base em dados de coleções, literatura e consulta a especialistas. São registradas 358 espécies, distribuídas por onze ordens e 43 famílias. Para a bacia do Paraguai são listadas 255 espécies; 201 o foram para a bacia do Alto Paraná. Cem espécies foram listadas para as duas bacias. Destas, 49 são espécies que ocorrem naturalmente nas duas bacias. Das outras espécies compartilhadas, três foram introduzidas nas duas vertentes e 45 introduzidas na bacia do Alto Paraná, a partir das bacias do Paraguai ou Médio Paraná. Quase um terço das espécies arroladas para a bacia do Alto Paraná (64), em Mato Grosso do Sul, foram introduzidas; introduções na vertente do rio Paraguai representam 1,2% da lista para a bacia. O número de espécies é considerado ainda baixo, representando um conhecimento ainda bastante incompleto, especialmente das regiões de cabeceiras do estado, mas também das terras baixas do Pantanal. To date, six species of terrestrial isopods were known from Brazilian caves, but only four could be classified as troglobites. This article deals with material of Oniscidea collected in many Brazilian karst caves in the states of Pará, Bahia, Minas Gerais, Mato Grosso do Sul, and São Paulo, and deposited in the collections of the Museu de Zoologia, Universidade de São Paulo, the Coleção de Carcinologia do Departamento de Zoologia, Universidade Federal do Rio Grande do Sul, and the collection of the Natural History Museum, Section of Zoology ‘La Specola’, Florence. Three new genera have been recognized: Spelunconiscus gen. nov. and Xangoniscus gen. nov. (Styloniscidae), and Leonardoscia gen. nov. (Philosciidae). Twenty‐two species have been identified, 11 of which in the families Styloniscidae, Philosciidae, Scleropactidae, Plathyartridae, Dubioniscidae, and Armadillidae are new to science: Leonardoscia hassalli sp. nov., Metaprosekia quadriocellata sp. nov., Metaprosekia caupe sp. nov., Amazoniscus leistikowi sp. nov., Novamundoniscus altamiraensis sp. nov., Trichorhina yiara sp. nov., Trichorhina curupira sp. nov., and Ctenorillo ferrarai sp. nov. from Pará; Xangoniscus aganju sp. nov. from Bahia; and Spelunconiscus castroi sp. nov. and Trichorhina anhanguera sp. nov. from Minas Gerais. Four new species in the families Styloniscidae (Spelunconiscus castroi sp. nov. and Xangoniscus aganju sp. nov.), Philosciidae (Leonardoscia hassalli sp. nov.), and Scleropactidae (Amazoniscus leistikowi sp. nov.) with highly troglomorphic traits can be considered as troglobitic, whereas all the remaining species are either troglophilic or accidentals. Brazilian caves are now under potential threat because of recent legislation, and the knowledge of the subterranean biodiversity of the country is thus of primary importance. © 2014 The Linnean Society of London

Ancistrus formoso and Trichomycterus dali are the only encountered species listed as vulnerable, likely a result of its limited distribution due to restriction to cave habitats in the karst environments of the Serra da Bodoquena (Cordeiro et al 2014); the restricted range and the frequent change of the landscape to harbor crop fields in the region represent a great menace to these species. The Miranda River Basin seems to offers sufficient resources to maintain numerous species, in particular species of concern with respect to conservation.…”

Survey of fish species from plateau streams of the Miranda River Basin in the Upper Paraguay River Region, Brazil

The objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive list of the fish fauna of headwater streams of the Miranda River in the Upper Paraguay River Basin. Our primary data set was constructed from sampling of fish using a rectangular sieve, trawl, and gill nets from 2004 to 2015. Our secondary data were derived from published reports conducted in the Miranda River Basin, in addition to taxonomic and distribution data from other studies conducted in the basin. All data were compiled, which in the end encompassed a period from 1999 to 2015. The datasets yielded a total of 143 species, 104 from the primary data (72.7%) and 39 from the secondary data (27.3%). Species were distributed among seven orders and 30 families were found in the Miranda River Basin. Characiformes and Siluriformes were the predominant orders, and the families Characidae and Loricariidae had the greatest number of species. Our results indicate a greater number of species compared to other studies of the Upper Paraguay Basin headwaters, likely due to the longer time frame covered by our primary and secondary datasets.
