Survey of fish species from plateau streams of the Miranda River Basin in the Upper Paraguay River Region, Brazil

Abstract: The objective of this study was to provide a comprehensive list of the fish fauna of headwater streams of the Miranda River in the Upper Paraguay River Basin. Our primary data set was constructed from sampling of fish using a rectangular sieve, trawl, and gill nets from 2004 to 2015. Our secondary data were derived from published reports conducted in the Miranda River Basin, in addition to taxonomic and distribution data from other studies conducted in the basin. All data were compiled, which in the end encomp… Show more

“…Consequently, these studies may result in new discoveries (e.g., undescribed species) and can be implemented as the basis for conservation actions (e.g., Castro et al 2004, Serra et al 2007, Raiol et al 2012, Ohara & Loeb 2016, Silva-Oliveira et al 2016, Melo et al 2016, Ferreira et al 2017.…”

“…The elaboration of any taxonomic list is not trivial, because much effort and time are spent in the specific techniques of sampling for a particular group of organisms as well as gaining the knowledge required about systematics, taxonomy, ecology, and natural history (Silveira et al 2010). Recognizing the species of fish is essential to design effective conservation and management strategies of aquatic ecosystems (Oliveira et al 2014;Agostinho et al 2016;Melo et al 2016;Ferreira et al 2017). Therefore, ichthyofaunistic inventories are crucial to robust analyzes of biodiversity involving ecological and biogeographic aspects.…”
