Prevalence of polymorphisms in the ANKK1, DRD2, DRD3 genes and metabolic syndrome in refractory schizophrenia

Abstract: Objective:to estimate the prevalence of TaqIA, -141C and rs6280 polymorphisms of the ANKK1, DRD2 and DRD3 genes and evaluate their association with the occurrence of metabolic syndrome in patients with refractory schizophrenia. Method:cross-sectional study conducted in the Extended Western Region of Minas Gerais, with refractory schizophrenic patients using the antipsychotic clozapine. Sociodemographic, clinical, anthropometric, biochemical and genetic data were collected. Univariate analysis of the data was p… Show more

“…This was the first DRD2 polymorphism that was associated with AP-induced weight gain, specifically in a randomized clinical trial performed in first-episode schizophrenia patients (Lencz et al, 2010). Interestingly, this variant has recently been also associated with low HDL levels in refractory schizophrenia (Pinto et al, 2018). Moreover, the most extensively DRD3 genetic variant (rs6280, also known as Ser9Gly) has been related to changes in TG and metabolic syndrome in treated patients with bipolar disorder (Chang et al, 2016).…”

“…The challenge of implementing pharmacogenetics in clinical practice has several obstacles (8,11) , which have been faced in a multidisciplinary way. There are several notes in the literature about the need for nurses to actively participate in this process, both to contribute to the consolidation of the tool itself and to enable its application to their daily lives (3,(15)(16)(17)(21)(22) .…”

“…In other countries, there is already evidence that this is important in this professional’s daily life, such as the use of genetic biomarkers in the care of diabetic ( 15 ) and schizophrenic patients ( 16 ) , in the treatment of pain ( 3 ) , in the treatment of cancer ( 17 ) , but there is still no clear evidence that this is relevant in our context. Thus, the general objective of the present study was to verify the existence of elements that justify the use of pharmacogenetics by the Brazilian nurse.…”
