Comparative study of representations of professional autonomy produced by first and last-period undergraduate nursing students

Abstract: Objective:to compare the social representations of professional nurse autonomy produced by first and last-period undergraduate nursing students. Method:qualitative, descriptive and exploratory study, based on the structural approach of social representations, the Central Core Theory, carried out with 171 students from three federal public universities, using the free association technique on the object “professional nurse autonomy”. The data were submitted to EVOC 2005 software and to similarity analysis. Resu… Show more

“…In relation to the investigated group's SR, the four-house board (Table 1) shows the central (upper left quadrant) and peripheral (other quadrants) elements related to the inducing term "caring for myself" inductor according to established criteria of analysis. Figure 1 is a graphical representation of the maximum similarity tree, where it is possible to visualize co-occurrences, from frequency analysis, resulting from the connection between words (23)(24)(25) . For the inducing words "caring form me is", 76 of the 122 participants simultaneously evoked two or more words among those comprising Table 1.…”

“…This technique does not allow to confirm the centrality of words, but indicates the elements that are considered central by the group. The calculation is based on the number of co-occurrences between two evocations, divided by the number of participants, simultaneously, and the result of said calculation is the similarity index (25) .…”

“…Chart 1 -Distribution of elements according to frequency of evocation and Average Order of Evocation by students of the 3rd term of the undergraduate nursing course, Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 2019 The upper left quadrant is the possible central core of SR; it contains the words that are highlighted in the discourses and that were the most cited by the students at the beginning of the undergraduate nursing course. Thus, the possible central core consists of the following evocations: values (20), hospital (14) and good service (13). The peripheral elements are located around the central core and divided into first periphery, in the upper right quadrant, and second periphery, in the lower right quadrant.…”

“…However, there is often a false interpretation of the term "autonomy" as total independence and self-sufficiency to decide and act alone. On the contrary, true autonomy is achieved when the professional acts in a context of interdependence between the various professionals with whom he works, respecting the limits of his duties, complying with agreements, solving situations and acting in a safe and effective manner (22)(23) . Therefore, autonomy is also a professional stance that reflects maturity and permanent self-criticism and a relationship pattern built for work.…”
