Background: Bridging the gap between local and scientific knowledge can have useful implications in the teaching-learning process because it can create environments conducive to the valorization of sociocultural diversity in schools. The present review aims to analyze the profile and contributions of scientific publications dealing with articulations between local and scientific knowledge in basic formal education. Method: Combined searches of 14 terms related to ethnoscience and 20 terms of education were conducted in English, Portuguese, and Spanish using the databases of Web of Science, Scopus, Science Direct, and Scielo. The recovered works were filtered, organized in a spreadsheet, and analyzed for publication characteristics (year, author, periodicals, countries of origin of the authors, and countries surveyed) and contents of the studies (epistemological bases, techniques of application, and record of the articulation of local and scientific knowledge). Results: The research field that establishes these articulations is growing, with 81% of the works being written in the English language. A total of 494 researchers were recorded. The USA, South Africa, Brazil, Canada, and Australia were the countries of origin of the first author for the majority (64%) of the works considered. Multiculturalism, Vygotskian theory of learning, postcolonial theory, constructivism, critical pedagogy, and the argumentation theory were the main theoretical bases of half of the recovered works in which some explicit theoretical orientation could be found. Teacher training and interviews stood out as important tools in the application and record of links between local and scientific knowledge, respectively. Conclusions: Interdisciplinary approaches were common in the conception and application of pedagogical activities reported in the recovered works. Articulations between local and scientific knowledge are effective for culturally-sensitive scientific education, especially (but not exclusively) in schools directly related to traditional communities. There was a tendency to emphasize the teacher as a fundamental agent in the search for education that establishes these articulations. The authors of the analyzed works frequently indicated a need for greater proximity of the community to school spaces.

Faced with the refuted hypothesis of the reduction and the extinction of indigenous peoples in Brazil, new perspectives and demands have emerged. This research aimed to investigate the access of indigenous peoples to formal education, especially in relation to science education in the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The indigenous schools of the Kaingáng and the Guarani ethnic groups were contextualized from the perspective of spatialization considering the Mesoregions, the municipalities, and the respective Regional Education Coordinators. The aspects investigated include number of enrollments (from 2011 to 2015), number of science teachers and their respective ethnicities, and the contribution of the school libraries. Thus, it is understood that there is a great reflection and consequent application of financial resources, aiming at the inclusion of indigenous peoples. However, demands have been identified, such as the adoption of principles of interculturality and bilingualism, the lack of adequate libraries and collections, the lack of science teachers, and the lack of indigenous teachers.

Resumo Atualmente, no que se refere à educação indígena, as legislações no Brasil trazem, em seus textos, tanto a necessária construção de uma escola diferenciada nas aldeias quanto a inclusão da temática indígena em escolas urbanas. Neste trabalho buscamos compreender a cultura do povo Pataxoop, cuja aldeia Muã Mimatxi localiza-se no município de Itapecerica, Minas Gerais. A nossa intenção é buscar elementos que auxiliaram na construção da identidade cultural desse povo, fortalecendo o sentimento de pertencimento. Trata-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, cujo objetivo é compreender o passado em suas conexões com o presente, diferenciando os tempos subjetivos da temporalidade do conjunto. Para tanto, entrevistamos o cacique e a professora da disciplina “Usos do território”, que tem construído desenhos-narrativas denominados tehêys de pescaria de conhecimento. Nos tehêys representa-se a formação do povo Pataxoop, suas cosmogonias, os mitos, as interações geracionais e as formas de resistência, além de se constituir como material didático para a escola da aldeia. Percebemos, nas duas entrevistas, uma narração espontânea, sem cortes, na qual os entrevistados desenvolveram as suas histórias com grande compromisso afetivo. Aumentamos a nossa compreensão sobre as interações entre educação, cultura e identidade desse grupo indígena, o que nos fez compreender melhor tanto a formação social do povo brasileiro quanto a importância dos mitos na construção da história da aldeia. O fato de compreender o modo de viver, de pensar, os rituais e as práticas sociais contribuiu para se pensar na seleção de temas para serem trabalhados nas escolas indígenas e urbanas.
