Mechanical Performance of Nickel-titanium Archwires

Abstract: The purpose of the present work is to compare the mechanical properties of commercially available NiTi orthodontic archwires lots. Superelastic (SE) and heat-activated (HA) NiTi archwires from two lots of six manufacturers (3M, GAC, Tp, Orthosource, Orthometric and Morelli) were partitioned into eleven groups (n=132) and tested under three-point bending tests. The difference between the highest (151.35 gf, Tp) and lowest (98.43 gf, 3M) unloading stresses among SE groups was 53.77% (p<.05), while the difference… Show more

“…NiTi wires could attend to the requirements for an archwire performance, which include low elastic modulus, high flexibility, minimal plastic deformation, resistance to fatigue, strength, good corrosion resistance, biocompatibility and production of constant small forces over a wide range of displacements. 15,16 Shape memory is one of the remarkable properties of the NiTi alloys. 16 The advantages of these wires include: fewer archwires are required to achieve the desired changes during orthodontic treatments, less chair side time, and less patient discomfort.…”

“…16 The advantages of these wires include: fewer archwires are required to achieve the desired changes during orthodontic treatments, less chair side time, and less patient discomfort. 15,16 Their poor formability makes them best suited for the pre-adjusted appliance. 16 In patients with severe crowding of anterior teeth, it is necessary to retract the canines into premolar extraction sites to gain enough space to align the incisors.…”

“…Her NiTi alaşımı bu transformasyona uğradığı spesifik bir sıcaklık aralığına sahiptir ve bu aralığa TTR denir (12). Ortodontik uygulamalar için sıklıkla kullanılan ticari NiTi alaşımları süperelastik veya ısıyla aktive edilmiş tellerdir (13). Süperelastik özellikleri ise östenit fazdan martensitik faza geçerken belirli sıcaklık aralığında kuvvet uygulanmasıyla gerçekleşir (14).…”

“…10,11 A study evaluating the mechanical properties of heat-activated and superelastic archwires concluded that heat-activated wires had superior mechanical properties. 12 Data related to the efficacy of NiTi archwires in relieving crowding and failure rates on their use intraorally with unpredictable clinical responses occasionally and changes in material surface are scant. In vivo studies of orthodontic alloys have concluded that intraoral ageing of alloys affects their mechanical and surface properties.…”
