Antibody response in silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) immunized with a model antigen associated with different adjuvants

Abstract: Adjuvants are essential to boost the immune response to inoculated antigen and play a central role in vaccine development. In this study, we investigated the efficacy of several adjuvants in the production of anti-bovine serum albumin (BSA) antibodies in silver catfish. Two hundred and seventy juvenile silver catfish (60–80 g) of both sexes were intraperitoneally vaccinated with BSA (200 µg/fish) alone or mixed to the following adjuvants: Freund’s complete adjuvant (FCA), Freund’s incomplete adjuvant (FIA), al… Show more

“…In addition, by using adjuvants that differently modulate the maturation of Th cells, these vaccines might induce both humoral and cellular-mediated immunity [14] , [15] , [16] . The humoral immune response of silver catfish to inoculated bacteria [17] or purified antigens mixed with different types of adjuvant, including β-glucan, Montanide, Freund's complete and incomplete adjuvant, ODNs CpGs [18] , and inactivated Parapoxvirus ovis [39] has also been investigated; antigen-specific antibodies peak from 3 to 4 weeks post vaccination. However, there is no data regarding the early events following vaccination and protection to challenge with A. hydrophila .…”

“…β‐glucans are polymers of glucose molecules linked by 1, 3/1, 6‐β‐D‐glycosidic bonds, which have been used as fish immunostimulants (Suchecka et al, 2015; Borchani et al, 2016; Pavan et al, 2016) and vaccine adjuvants (Rodríguez et al, 2016; Sanchez et al, 2021). In this regard, the combination or conjugation of antigenic proteins with β‐glucans is an innovative approach to vaccine development (Reyes‐Becerril et al, 2016; Reyes‐Becerril et al, 2020; Rubio‐Infante & Moreno‐Fierros, 2016).…”
