Background In Mexico, motorcycle use is increasingly prevalent owing to the availability and low fuel consumption of the vehicle. With the increasing number of motorcycle users, the rate of injuries and mortality due to road traffic accidents has also increased. Objective The study aimed to describe the epidemiological profile of injured motorcyclists treated in a third-level hospital, who were involved in traffic accidents in Guadalajara's Metropolitan Area and Zapotlanejo municipality. Methods We realized a logistic regression model, where we included all variables with p<=0.25, they had three or less response options became in dummy variables for facilitate the analysis and we took as confounders factors either variables that modify up to 10% the value of Odd Ratio. Results In our study, we examined 180 injured motorcyclists. The factors that increases risk of severe injury at Metropolitan Zone of Guadalajara and Zapotlanejo’s town were as follows: the motorcycle was not functioning properly prior to the incident (OR 76.89, 2.08-2839.25), the motorcyclist consider had committed any traffic infraction at the time of the event (OR 6.88, 1.30-36.26), the injured live in Metropolitan Zone of Guadalajara (OR 7.58, 1.15-50.17), driving a motorcycle when the driver did not know if the vehicle was “salvage” or not (OR 113.84, 9.13-1419.96) and as protectors factors, we found that a person drove a motorcycle with brand not Italika (OR 0.06, 0.008-0.41) and the road traffic occurred by line road or intersection “+”(OR 0.10, 0.02-0.61). Conclusion This information allowed to observe that exist elements of motorcyclist, and the motorcycle and environment that increases or reduced severity injuries in this group, most important when they did not have a health insurance.

Introduction: In the recent era of trauma, about one million people get seriously injured annually. Majority of them suffer from lower limb injuries. Due to lack of trauma registry in India, prediction models are not much effective. The aim of our study was to derive basic epidemiological parameters for lower limb injuries which can be used to develop better prediction models to reduce morbidities and mortalities. Methods: We conducted an observational study on isolated lower limb injuries without any musculoskeletal disorder at a tertiary care institution in Ahmedabad between January 2013 & October 2014. The lower limb injuries were classified as per the Limb Salvage Index score (LSI) for further management. Results: A total of 1160 patients were included. Mean age was 44.5 years and 75 percent of them were males. Lower limb injuries showed bi-modal age group with first peak between 30 to 40 years and second at 60 to 70 years. Road traffic accidents were the most common cause of injury followed by fall at home. 1.8 percent patients had Limb Salvage Index ranging between 7 to 12 and underwent amputations. Both lower limbs were almost equally affected with left showing a little higher value than right (49 versus 47 percent, p>0.05). Femur was the most commonly affected bone. Conclusion: This study helped us in identifying certain characteristics that may be useful for planning preventive strategies in an attempt to reduce the numbers of accidents and redirect public investment in health.

Resumo A análise da distribuição da mortalidade de motociclistas nos municípios brasileiros é fundamental para o entender e tentar minimizar a ocorrência deste crescente fenômeno. O principal objetivo do presente trabalho é analisar a distribuição espacial das taxas de mortalidade de ocupantes de motocicletas nos municípios brasileiros, a partir de estimativas mais robustas e confiáveis. Adicionalmente, pretendeu-se identificar a presença de padrões espaciais na distribuição das mesmas. As taxas brutas foram construídas com base no número de óbitos de motociclistas considerando a média das ocorrências nos anos de 2014, 2015 e 2016. Estas taxas foram padronizadas diretamente e suavizadas utilizando o estimador bayesiano empírico local. A identificação da presença de padrões espaciais foi realizada a partir de um indicador local de autocorrelação espacial (LISA). As taxas de mortalidade mais elevadas foram observadas em municípios da região Nordeste e Centro-Oeste. Estas regiões concentraram, também, a maior parte aglomerados de municípios com padrão alto-alto na distribuição das taxas. A suavização bayesiana se mostrou eficiente para lidar com os valores extremos, ampliando a confiabilidade das estimativas e melhorando a visualização das mesmas no mapa.
